Hen o'clock

Recommended Posts

and my 3 rescue girls have arrived....delivered by Jason, who collected them from the farm last night.

They are very scruffy, bless them, with the typical huge and floppy combs - and one of them is nearly a naked neck but they all look reasonably positive about life and one of them had laid a beautiful brown egg in her travelling box.

So, they are now installed in the !gored! well away from the rest of the flock & I've got to tear myself away and go do some vicaring.

I THINK their names are Holly, Ivy & Mistletoe - though I have to get family approval first.

So happy they are here...so want to make life better for them

Why haven't I done this before?

Just popped down to say Goodnight to them & all 3 have found their way happily back into the !gored! from the run and are snuggled together nicely..Ivy was nearest the door, so I gave her a gentle stroke & told them all that they are free now. Mistletoe has taken over the nest box - but frankly, after all they've gone through, they are welcome to sleep wherever they like.

The other girls don't seem to have noticed the newbies are here. I was waiting for a chorus of disapproving boks but thus far they seem to be mutually oblivious.

Congratulations, they are lucky girls. I love the seasonal names :D

I thought the same, I let mine sleep where they wanted to. When I had the three one would sleep in the nest box and the other two perched around the edge, now that there are two they have given up on the nest box and sleep huddled together in the corner of the eglu.

Enjoy them.

Darkbrowneggs - my forum name is shared with my blog, which I did indeed start as a curate...I'm a vicar now, - so things are even more patchy in their goodness but it has stuck!

Thanks, all, for the encouragement. Ivy seems to be a bit of a bully & has the odd gratuitous peck at poor Mistletoe, but nothing too fierce so I'll just keep an eye on them.

Not sure they've worked out where their food is - they have ex-batt crumb in one of those small "lantern" feeders, plus layers mash in the grub but though I've seen them drinking from the glug I've not seen any eating going on yet. They are, though, beginning to peck about in the run - so perhaps they'll work it out when I'm not there. Any hints or tips for teaching them where the next meal is coming from??

I've been running around so much (Christmas & churches seem to do this to me!) that I've only got this picture, from day 1...when Mistletoe was still being shy.

3 days on, she's emerged as the cleverest of the trio and has taught the other 2 where food & water can be found. They seem to be doing well & we're down to just one egg a day, which makes me happy as I want them to save their energy to get their strength back.

The other girls had a FR round their run earlier, and "Ooops, word censored!"ody seemed worried, on either side of the fence....though it will be a good few weeks before I consider letting them FR together, that's for sure.
