High Street Shops Remembered

Recommended Posts

I read an article the other day about Shops we used to have that are no longer there, and there were some names on there that brought back a few memories! I thought maybe we could reminicse too?

Some I remember....

FADS - we used to go there for our wallpaper

Texas Homecare - one of the first big DIY stores here

Courts Furniture - first wall cabinet and sideboard!

Chelsea Girl - I know that river island are now doing a revival label , but the shop was fantastic especially their changing rooms with red saloon style doors

Midland Bank

Fine Fare - and their yellow labelled foods!

Our Price records

Gateway

Im sure there are loads that will come to mind  !

We had an International here. I remember my parents saving up the coupons for the blue and white dinner set. We had quite a lot of it.

We also had a Richards here as well.

I also miss Woolies. Robert Dyas just isn't the same.

We had a shop here in the early 80's. It sold all sorts of stationary wares, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was called. I don't think it was part of a chain - more a small local shop. I spent quite a lot of time in that shop when I was a teen.

Ooh I still rmnenber the Richards Shops jingle:

Richard SHops...Full of all the pretty things to wear

Hey there, pretty face, make the world a prettier place

Pretty girl, come buy your clothes at Richard Shops.

EDITED: I remembered the missing words.

I was singing the Richard Shops jingle whilst reading this!

I remember Van Allen (had a lilac and black tracksuit from the Scarborough shop in about 1976, aged 10, and thought I was the bees knees  ), Benbows, Brentford Nylons, Revolver Records, loved C&A, I believe it still trades on the continent (and I still have a lovely grey winter coat from C&A), Richard Shops (still have a pretty chiffon scarf I bought from there).

Ooh, memories :D

I was watching an episode of Knowing Me Knowing You with Alan Partridge the other day and it featured Tandys. I'd completely forgotten they ever existed  My dad used to drag me around there while mum went to Sainsburys next door. I remember the grey patterned carpet

Funny that; I remember the speckly floor in Sainsbury's!

I must have a foot thing as the ones I miss most are Sock Shop and Dolces. I remember moving from London to York and not knowing what to do because there were no sock shops. . . . Couldn't think where to get socks and tights from  But I have found a source for clogs just like they used to do them in Dolces  - not a shop however but a craft stall
