Hello, everyone.

Would welcome recommendations as dentist has recommended I get one ... but which one? I'm prepared to buy a good one, but it still feels extravagant as we aren't loaded. Advice on good ones that you have used would be welcome.

The Braun ones are good. I was advised by a dental hygienist to stick to the standard sized heads rather than some of the larger ones that you can get. We use a mid priced one rather that some that claim to be all singing all dancing. They seem to be intermittently on offer in places like Boots or the supermarkets so I would keep your eyes peeled

I use a Philips Sonicaire, my children use the child's version. My teeth have never felt cleaner. They are rather pricey but we got ours while they were on offer. I get replacement heads for them (the toothbrushes, not the children ) from Amazon. Mine was recommended by my dentist.

We have Braun mid-range too and have always been really happy with it. Sainsbury's sometimes has them heavily discounted so it's worth shopping around as they are expensive.

 

The replacement heads are a ridiculous price so look out for offers on them too. I bought my last lot on Ebay and they were a fraction of the price (and were the real McCoy too!)

I have a Phillips Sonicaire too. It is fantastic.

I can not sing the praises of my Phillips sonicare enough. I had very bad gum problems about 9 years ago and my dentist and hygienest recommend it. It improved my gums beyond belief and saved expensive works.

 

It is now one of my essentials not a luxury, when it broke it was immediately replaced. I would give up other stuff first.

 

I went somewhere recently and forgot my toothbrush. I had to buy a standard one and could really tell the difference. To me, my teeth don't feel clean now without it. As you can tell I am so keen on it you would think I worked for them. Worth every very expensive penny.

We have a sonicare toothbrush, recommended by the dentist, but I have to say I've not been that impressed. My OH recently had to consult a peridontist, (at huge expense) who recommended the Braun Precision Clean which you can buy for about £35, and he much prefers this....I like the fact that the replacement heads for the Braun are very much cheaper than the Phillips .......

Braun here too - neither of us would be without our electric toothbrushes, have been using one for about 12 years now and nothing cleans quite like them. Gentle on the gums as well. I also bought an AirFloss last year and swear by that as well! X

Looks like we are in the minority here then with an Oral B, they are often on offer and can be bought for as little as £15-20, Superdrug, Boots and the supermarkets often have half price offers or better for the heads. I was also recommended to get one by my dentist because I come from a family of people with gum disease. They are amazing, you notice the difference almost straight away, I have passed on the advice to quite a few people who have all been pleased that I did.

 

They also work well on the teeth of teenagers with braces, because they are gentle enough not to break them but they do get into all the nooks and crannies.

Rosie and I have Oral B brushes too, with the small heads; our dentist always commends us on the condition of our teeth, so they must be good!

 

Having said that, a lot of it is down to how you use it and the toothpaste which you use... apparently.

We use the Colgate Actibrushes,which are about £9 each,but are often on BOGOF.

They are battery operated & I love them.

 

That said,I would love a proper built in electric brush system,so will be watching this thread with interest

What's that? I was getting a little bleeding when flossing and the dentist said not to floss so much, which worries me as I have a tendency to mild gingivitis if I'm not careful . (I was doing it almost daily but not excessively.)

Ditto for me - I have some awkward crown spacing at the back and get food stuck, also have very little (basically no!) gaps between my bottom front teeth, so need to floss, but it used to make my gums bleed just because it was so tricky to get in. And it's a right Faff! I don't have gum disease according to the dentist - but when i was moaning about flossing he recommended I try an airfloss. It's basically a handheld wireless thingy that shoots a little jet of water between your teeth, acting like floss but easy to direct and (after your gums get used to it, which took me about a week) no bleeding. It's pretty bulky but lasts for about a month on one charge, you just fill it up from the tap. Have you tried dental tape instead of floss? Much easier to use.

 

My dentist makes me laugh... tells me how good and clean my teeth are, then tries to get me to go to the hygienist I don't see why I should pay the equivalent f a week's worth of groceries to achieve what the dentist has just said doesn't need doing

It's not really the type of floss, it's the spacing between my teeth that makes it tricky, like you Superkitty. I'll look into the Airfloss thingy, sounds interesting .

Another vote for the cheapo Braun but I use the floss action heads. Bought heads cheply off Amazon last time I needed some.

 

Used to use an expensive Sonicare one but when that one broke I bought a Braun. My regular hygenist commented on how much better my teeth were and wasn't surprised when I told her the change to Braun.

I'd second tape instead of floss, much more comfortable in a crowded mouth!

 

I have the Oral B Vitality and Vitality Sonic, the latter was just £5 from Boots a couple of years ago. I only bought it as I was looking for a normal toothbrush and it was the same price as two mid range manual toothbrushes I much prefer the old Vitality though, the charge lasts longer and the little round head suits my small mouth better.

Sonicare here - replaced under warranty as has a 2 year one when it stopped working - fantastic service they gave me. My teeth always feel so clean and awful if I dont have it with me.

ANH, I have to say that we tried the floss actions heads... once and once only; they are really 'hard' and made my gums sore.

I did read that in one of the Amazon reviews - I'm only getting one brush head so will revert to my usual ones if that's the case (which I suspect it will be). The toothbrush will take any of the heads, thankfully.

Oral B here. I don't know about the other types, but with oral B you can get different size and shaped toothbrush heads, which was very useful when I had braces a couple of years ago. From what I've heard from friends using other brands they all have good models, but it's worth checking the price of the toothbrush heads before you buy one. The only problems we had was that after 4 years (I think?) with the four of us using it we wore out the button and had to buy a new one, but we felt we got our moneys worth
