The Olympics - the sport

Recommended Posts

I agree about the anthem comments - it was totally disrespectful of the interviewer to talk over the anthem and force the Jamaican athletes to reply whilst they were showing all the respect due to somebody else's fantastic achievement. I've always thought these 'trackside' interviews are hugely irritating, they are very shallow. If he says 'Tell me your thoughts' once more I shall switch him off

Couldn't agree more, and have also been disgusted when interviewers have persisted in asking banal questions when one or two of the athletes were clearly upset and disappointed.

I've been shouting at the tv at the commentators! So fed up of them saying "they'll be sooo disappointed with that performance" and "I'm disappointed for them" :x Oh, and questions when the interviewee is blatantly gutted such as "are you happy with that performance?", "you must be so upset not to achieve your previous pb" etc etc etc. :x:x I appreciate it must be a hard job to interview some of the athletes but honestly.....grrr....and breathe!:lol:

I am so pleased that Lutalo Muhammid got the Bronze in the TKD, that poor guy has received hate mail and death threats because he was selected over someone else. Whatever went on between Aaron Cook and the selectors had nothing to do with him and he looked completely broken when it looked like he was going to go home with no medal. Poor chap now just has to field all of the rubbish questions in interviews over the next few days. :(

Still worn out after screaming at the telly for Mo Farah to win the 5000 metres. Unbelievable race, so glad he won but I felt I had run it with him!

I have been shooting in an archery competition all day followed by a barbecue at the golf club, as we were in the bar the room erupted as Mo won, unusual behaviour for the golf club. Everyone stopped, watched and cheered.

With you, Griffin!!

Tom is 100% British athlete, who has had to get pretty far up the Slippery pyramid that is the Olympic pathway with only family sponsorship financially. It's tough, and he's had all his personal grief as well. My DS was on the pathway, at national level, so we do know the lack of £ is a great issue. At National level, it was costing us over 7k a yr. Not funny,

I was lucky enough to be at the marathon yesterday. We were in The Mall about 100 yards from the finish. The atmosphere was amazing and each and every runner got the same ovation as the winner. Everyone stayed until the last runner had finished - it was an athlete from Lesoto I think who had only done a half marathon before. He stopped about 5k from the end but was determined to finish so he made it with a combination of walking and jogging. He was about 10 minutes behind the next to last person but I think he felt like a winner.

The runner before him (who would have been placed about 82nd!) finished the race draped in his flag and had a beaming smile as he ran along The Mall touching hands with the crowd. It made me quite tearful.

We were standing with a lovely couple from the US, who had very bravely come to the event with 1 year old twins! Her brother was running and he came 4th which was very exciting.

It was a magical day and I think that it really epitomised "it's not the winning it's the taking part that counts"

I have loved everything about the olympics - I am now an armchair expert in double trap shooting, handball, fencing,.......

I loved everything Olympic, as far as I am concerned this is what a television is for, the best things are live events and sport. the opening and closing ceremonies were great, the closing one went on a bit and I could have done without George Michael's second self indulgent song, but the whole thing has made me feel very proud to be British. :D

A big round of applause to everyone involved.

Ditto! I didn't mind the length of the closing, I sort of wish it had either ended with Eric Idle or with Take That. I could have done without George Michael completely! At least they didn't roll Paul McCartney out again

Totally agree re George Michael & Paul McCartney. George Michael seemed to think it was his concert. I wish they would back Madness a bit more though, I love Suggs but he's not the best singer. At least they didn't wheel out Cheryl Cole.

Yes I;m glad we didnt have Paul McCartney again. The kinks guy needed a haircut and when he sang Waterloo sunset the "sha la la" bit - OH thought he shouted "shut up" I have booked him into hearing aid clinic - wouldnt mind but its his ear. Wanted to see Spice girls but went on soooo long fell asleep.

What I saw I liked - except - George Michael, some depressing dirge sung by a woman in a green dress, I thought Annie Lennox and Russell Brand were hopeless, I missed the Spice Girls - not sorry.

The rest was great especially Stomp, they always add something special. I did love the crazy mix even the bits I didn't like were right because this is a pretty mixed up nation and we all like different things.

Am I the only one who noticed on the TV coverage of the closing ceremony, that we now have HRH Prince ' Henry ' of Wales!!!! Surely this was a boo boo - as it was Prince Harry. They even said Henry in the subtitle!!!

Not even the Newspapers have mentioned it. Have they been told not to? Or have I missed something - is he really Henry? :?

Spice Girls were the best in the closing Ceremony & Take That of course. I loved the London Skyline.

Jessie J is too much - how much does she love herself!

Fatboy Slim we enjoyed too!

I hadn't thought abiut that Chickencam, I guess in the stadium it would all have sounded very different.

I haven't checked but I'm sure Prince Harry's actual name is Henry, I think it's traditional with aristocratic types to be called Harry if you're christened Henry. No idea why. Henry VIII was called Harry, Hal and so on. Apologies if I've got that wrong.
