So how much shoulda vet bill be?

Recommended Posts

Hi every one

Took my Hazel aka Evil Edna to the vet yeasterday.

She was a nice vet but a came out with a near £60 bill...

That included the examination, 5 days of Baytrill and 7 days of Flubenvet for a flock of 3 birds

Should it be this much?

I couldn't watch Hazel struggling anymore and she did have a temperature and had lost allot of weight so I'm really glad I took her its probably saved her life but even so!

I have only been to the vet with mine once and the examination and sadly PTS cost me £70  No drugs etc at all...

I have not got a chicken vet near at all and the vet I saw had not got a clue.I had only had my chickens 3 months at that stage and did not know a thing. When she told me that PTS was the best option I trusted her.Since learning more from this great site and having similer things happen I know now 18 months on I could have saved her . :(

If you have a good vet and save your girls life then of course it is worth it and you are lucky .I think they rely on the fact that we think they know and are exspensive .

I hope she is getting on fine .

I don't think that's actually bad at all. Baytrill and Flubenvet don't normally come in small quantities. I recently had a course of Tylan which was only for one chicken really, an a consultation over the phone (the vet knew I knew what I was talking about) and it cost £45. The annoying fact is qhilst chickens (eglu aside) are not expensive animals to keep, if they have to go to the vet it's not cheap. I mean, to have a hamster put to sleep it was £22 for me recently, so even though it's a pain, I don't think you have been over charged.

When I first went to my Vet with a very poorly Dotty, over the phone I was quoted a £30 Consultation Fee and £30 for a course of Tylan  At my appointment I told the Vet that I felt I should be charged the 'small animal' rate and that I couldn't justify paying £60 when Dotty cost me about £20 :!: He agreed and I was charged £24 for the Consultation, Tylan injection, a further 2 syringes and a bottle of Tylan Soluble to treat the whole gang. I don't know if having 2 dogs and a cat registered with them made any difference (although they've only ever had boosters etc) but I think it pays to speak up and query why they feel it's ok to charge so much money to look at and treat chickens! :shameonu:

Don't get me started on the small animal fee .........grrrrrr

Chickens at my vets are at least charged a small animal fee, something like £15.00

I did buy Flubenvet from them and that was £19.00 something.

And when Heidi was ill it didn't cost too much. Sorry I can't find the receipt right now, but she had the consultation, baytril, an antibiotic injection and 2 packets of bio salts.

When I took my ex-batt to the vet to have her look at her injury it cost me £17.00. As she said, as I was doing the right thing, and there didn't seem to be any infection she didn't see the point in prescribing anything. She advised that if she did get any worse or an infection set in to bring her back.

OK so £17.00 could buy me another 3 ex-batts but she is one of my girls and the £17.00 bought me peace of mind in the bucket load :D

Scruffy the ex bat set us back £110 with drugs, blood tests and worming (See thread back from the dead). I was a bit upset at first as we had only had her a week but at the end of the day, if we are not prepared to pay when they are ill we shouldn't have them. Having said that our hens are more pets than utillity and I would accept vet bills if it were a dog or cat.

Well I've given Hazel 3 syringes of oral anti biotics now and I'm very pleased to say she is much perkyer!

We're having to chase her round the houses to catch her for her dose

She's still coughing a bit but I expect the flubenvet takes a few days to show any effect...

Red wing I think youve got a good deal the examination (without checking my bill) was about £26 with VAT ...

I may look for a better "deal" next time but I'm hoping they'll be ok

I think leaving them with OH and our house sitter stressed her out and made her more susceptible to infection

Next Holliday they are going to the lovely hen hotel in the woods!

Our neighbours down the road let their girl "go" without seeing the vet ...

I'm so pleased I went, I couldn't watch an animal struggle and slowly painfully die that was in my care :shameonu:

I know there monetary value is small but they are living creatures and our pets after all
