In my search for work, I've been invited to an Asda "Have a Go " event for temporary job on their checkouts.

 

It is only 1/2 hour and sounds like fun, so I thought I'd ask if any of you have been to one and what they are looking for? Any tips as to what to say or do, or not to say or do?

 

Dress code is "smart but casual" and no trainers, so I'm assuming not jeans either, and was looking at black trousers and a top - too formal?

 

I'm quite looking forward to it, as I've never operated a checkout - sad, sad person !

Never heard of it! Sounds interesting though.

You choice of dress sounds just right. Expect they'll give you some sort of uniform so you'll be mostly covered up anyway.

Good luck. Tills have changed since I did Saturday work but I always enjoyed working on the tills.

 

For clothes why don't you wander into a store and take a look at what people are wearing and what looks smart and professional under the Asda uniforms. Err on the side of being smart but not too smart for the day and I agree plain trousers.

 

When you do the try out I suspect they will be watching to see how well you engage with customers as well as how well you manage on the till.

It wasn't for Asda,but I attended a group interview for supermarket checkout work & got the job

Be smiley,make yourself stand out.....I was by FAR (at 44) the oldest there,& when a question was asked a lot of the youngsters looked as if they would rather stick a fork in their eye than put themselves forward first,but I did & I think it went in my favour as it showed me to be confident & outgoing.

We had to draw our favourite animal - naturally I drew a chicken,then we had to explain why one by one,so that was easy peasy.

I wore back trousers & a white shirt....one young lady wore jeans & she didn't get a position.

 

I enjoy my work. You get to meet & chat to a wide range of people & even tricky/nasty/drunk/unwashed customers are only with you for a very short time anyhow

Back in the Middle Ages I worked on the till at WH Smith in Henley for 6 months. Most of the time it was really good fun and virtually all the customers were lovely !

 

I think that Asda will want you to be freindly, chatty, helpful ('shall I pack for you?' sort of thing!) and unflappable! But half and hour will just fly by! Just keep smiling!!!!

I'm a cashier in a bookies. Have clean hands, neat clothes & hair, be polite, smile alot and say hello to every customer. It's good fun mostly.

Don't do what the boy in Waitrose did today (and I was VERY surprised as Waitrose are usually excellent ) and ask me.......

"Do you need bags?"

And I replied "No thank you, I have bags, these are my bags" as I pointed to to 3 open bags, right in front of him! OK, do your 'script', but use your common sense too!

AND ...... he was in a race to scan the shopping before I managed to pack - most unWaitrose like!

 

He must have been new!

In his defence,we do ask if a customer needs bags even if they have them as lots of people want to wrap chicken,fish,ice cream or other frozens in an extra bag.

It does sound like he was being a bit dim though

 

Oddly,even though we don't have a script as such,you get into a zone where you find yourself asking the same thing at the same point in the sale over & over & over.

It plays with your head & you can get quite hypnotised by the repetitiveness.....I have often had someone waving at me saying 'Hello Sarah' & have looked straight through them,blankly (haven't I Patricia? )

It takes a bit of a walk & a good strong coffee to snap you out of it!

 

Oodles of fun at work today............we ran out of carrier bags.

Well, today's the day! I know where I'm going (it's not the most local store) and have programmed the satnav, I've decided what I'm going to wear (black top with 3/4 sleeves, black trousers, black boots, pretty but inexpensive jewellery), found my make up ... and it's not till 2.30 .

 

I'm unusually nervous, as my confidence has taken a bit of a knock in the last week, but it's only 1/2 an hour, if I do make a mess it will not bring about the end of the world as we know it, and it'll probably be fun.

We shop in our local Asda a lot, it has only been open for just over a year, and one of the first things that we noticed were the pleasant, smiling polite staff, they obviously choose well.

Thanks everyone - the Omlet positive vibes did good stuff and I've been invited back for 6 hours of basic training today . It was all very quick yesterday and I think if it goes ok today, I've got a job - cautiously Only temporary and 15 hours but it will get me back into work, out of the house and earning money to pay for xmas. I'll also get to learn new skills, which has got to be good.

 

The planned outfit worked well, as Asda's uniform is black and lime green so I looked neat and tidy, and didn't clash. I got to do some bagging for customers yesterday and then an interview about teamworking, customer service and attendance. The manager said my understanding of customer service was excellent - one of the few joys of maturity and having worked with people for a very long time. The manager was about 1/2 my age, bless him!

 

Hoping it all goes well today . Just being on my feet and active for six hours should ensure I sleep well tonight

I got the job and a permanent contract, not just a temporary one

 

It's only 15 hours a week, though there may be overtime available as well. I'll be working on the checkout, so lots of customer contact and it should be busy enough to make the time pass quickly.

 

My first shift is on Saturday and I'm ridiculously excited about it !

Do Asda offer longer basic working patterns than 15hrs per week though? They are looking to open a store near me and in the presentation they said their contracts were either 9 or 15 hours
