SylvisMum
I am really looking forward to this programme starting on Tuesday. Anyone else wanting to see it? I am going to record it and watch it on Wednesday when our eldest daughter comes to visit. It would be interesting to see what all you Crafty people think of the show. TheGirlsMum
I saw that advertised last night and thought if it can help a total numpty like me it would be good
redbug
That will give a lot of people inspiration to do sewing!
Olly
Thanks for reminding me, I must set this to record - looks very interesting.
Lesley
I'm looking forward to seeing what they do and my grand-daughter has just started making clothes so she'll be watching it as well.
Egluntyne
I am looking forward to this too. Note to self ........ you do not have either the time or the space for any more hobbies!
Bramble
I'm looking forward to this too, not entirely sure what kind of programme it'll be - I'm thinking Great British Bake Off (but for sewing, obviously!) but we'll have to see!
Egluntyne
It was described as being the Great British Bake-Off with needles on the One show last night.
SylvisMum
I will be interested to see what machines they're using there. I am hoping for some inspiration and some good tips as well.
Jennifer Jane
I'm planning to watch this too. When I first started work I used to make loads of clothes, even suits! I barely have time to make a cushion cover nowadays . Mind you perhaps if I watched less television... I'm hoping it will do for dressmaking what Great British Bake Off did for baking. Perhaps it will cause more shops to stock fabrics - I know you can get them online, but there's nothing like actually feeling them and there is nowhere in my town now that I know of that stocks dressmaking fabric. I am hoping that the programme will increase interest in dressmaking as well and that fabrics will be stocked in more local shops. I have to go to John Lewis or the market, or get things on the internet and I really miss the lovely fabric shops that used to be around locally. I also hope that the programme will teach something about the lovely things you can make with just a basic machine and that you don't really need an all-singing, all dancing one. My first machine I ever used was my grandmother's Singer treadle machine with just a straight stitch. I still have it. It is nice to have the extra bits, which I have on my electric, but she used to make lovely things with her machine, beautifully finished and I have made some nice clothes on it too. Not suits though. I would love to do that, or beautiful bridal wear. I sometimes gaze at the wedding dresses in shops and think "That stitching looks a bit off". They cost such a lot but the fabric is not always very nice, and you can tell they have been whizzed up in a hurry.
Charlottechicken
It is on in a few seconds! I am watching for inspiration to spur me on. I am a lazy sewer, but OH is badgering me for waistcoats, we have a pattern, I just need to crack on.
Lesley
I love making waistcoats! I made four when we got married. I'm going to save watching this until Lauren is able to watch it with me - she's bedbound with a dislocated hip - so I'll revisit this thread once we've seen it. Princess Leia
Whilst any programme that gets crafts more publicity has got to be a good thing, am I the only one irritated by the title? Did someone move the UK west by about 5000 miles without us noticing? The use of such an American term in the title seems strange and unnecessary. Plus, I don't like Claudia Winkleman (which doesn't help) - OH reckons she ruined the BBC Film programme even more than Wossy did!
craftyhunnypie
I quite enjoyed this & some of the fabrics were scrummy. I loved the cars skirt, even though it wasn't brilliantly made. Marks spotty dress was very nice. Why would you ever make a wrap around dress, everyone knows that they always gape around the boob area. Oh & silk Would have been better as a kimono / dressing gown. Trousers next week will be funny. I used to make my own whacky hippy trousers when I was in sixth form. They were easy, but sometimes I'd turn them the right way out, to find one leg perfect & the other the wrong way out. There is a book to go with the series. Don't think I'll bother though. I wish they sold patterns of what they had created ( when good). We have a fabulous fabric shop in Aber, plus a decent selection in surrounding towns a short drive away. I can feel a swap coming on soon.....an altered t shirt! Emma.x
Chickendoodle
Enjoyed it very much, largely due to the presence of the delicious Patrick Grant. He was also very fair and knowledgeable. Looking forward to trouser week
Bramble
I was a teeny bit disappointed in this I think I was expecting it to be much more basic than it was and would give me a few more pointers (about how to use a sewing machine etc) - the basic project of a laundry bag was done very quickly but that's probably me being dense Think I'll go on to YouTube and see if I can find any Sewing-for-Total-Morons videos
redbug
I was a little disappointed with the show, thought it would be more inspirational especially if it is to get more interest in sewing. Maybe a few more how toos. I agree laundry bag directions where a bit quick. But it would be good to get more interest in sewing. Hopefully prices of equipment won't start going up!! Olly
I'll probably watch it again, but I can't help feeling they chose the contestants to provide a contrast, rather than on the basis of their sewing skills ... Mark has only ever put a zip in three times before, surely there must have been other applicants with better qualifications to take part! I also thought the laundry bag project was pointless - if you're not experienced, you would never manage to follow that and if you are an expereinced sewer you probably don't need those instructions! Bramble, if you Google 'drawstring bag tutorial' you will find loads of suggestions for making one of these. I used to make a lot of my own clothes as a teenager, and until recently I had only ever used a hand-operated machine which belonged to my grandmother (and which my mother used to clothe five of us, make curtains, fancy dress costumes, bridesmaids dresses ... ) so I completely agree with you SylvisMum, it would be good to show what you can do with a basic straight stitch and some knowledge. I just don't think I could be bothered to make my own clothes now, but it was interesting to see how well fitted some of the dresses were (and how badly fitted the others were!). sadietoo
Why did "Ooops, word censored!"ody tell me this was on???? Seriously only just caught up with this thread and will catch up with first episode!.....I'm useless at sewing really, but I love textiles generally and so I am looking forward to it....... blueandwhite
I thought it was great that they had such a wide variety of people with different experiences. I used to make clothes many years ago and even made loose covers for a sofa once. I did like the idea of customising a simple white top - some of them turned out really well (some didn't!) Lesley
I've watched it with Lauren now and she was inspired by it....I was disappointed! I'm glad it inspired a 15 year old but, as others have said, it doesn't show enough of the basic skills. I made Lauren a 'Sew your own Pyjamas' kit for Christmas ....... it came with a 'Free Grandma' I was brought up sewing as my Mum was a seamstress and made all our clothes and for all the family and neighbours. Lauren had a sewing machine for Christmas and has been sorting out basic sewing on her own - none of that shown on the programme. We've opened the pattern and discussed how patterns work and what all those scary symbols mean - none of that shown either. They didn't even show proper close-ups of the garments being sewn. I shall keep watching as you never know what you might learn - I think a lot of us were expecting a completely different format, especially after the GBBO which it has been compared to. GBBO did show basics and explain why something was done in the way that it was...........perhaps the sewing programme will move in that direction if it makes it to another series. Bramble
Enjoyed watching it, but again disappointed 'cos most of the actual sewing went completely over my head The cushion idea was nice, but again, the instructions were rushed and nowhere near idiot-proof enough for me. Enjoyable watch though and I'll stick with it ...
SylvisMum
I'm enjoying the programme, and was especially interested to see the construction of the trousers as I have not attempted any before. My husband watched as well and his comment was that on the last day of this episode, the contestants were all wearing the same clothes as they had been wearing the day before. Makes one wonder if the programme is all filmed on one day. Huge pressure, and they must be exhausted if so.
