Alis girls
YS 12 has had this horrendous cough for 2weeks. Saw GP 10 days ago with what I thought was tail end of flu - hes mildy asthmatic. Given inhalers and antibiotics and sent on our way. Long story short - this cough is drying us mad - not a whoopy cough, or croupy just constant. Hes been back 4 times now. One lot of oral steroids - short lull last weekend which meant we thought we were out of the woods and had ES's 18th birthday do. Back to school yesterday - cough back with avengance. Back to GP tonight - chest X ray and nose swab done and high dose horse pills. No school for another week. They dont know whats wrong ? whooping cough (all vaccines done) or pneumonia. In between hes got no temp and is eating well. OH and I are worried sick and tired out. My son tells me off for flinching when he coughs. On first name terms with receptionn staff and we have our own seat in waiting room. Joking aside as a nurse I have exhausted my expertise. if this dosesnt work - Gp said its hospital for bloods etc. Any one had similar probs? Charlottechicken
I'm sure everything will be OK, but a cough is so annoying for the person with the cough and everyone else around! If it helps, I generally have an horrendous cough for up to six weeks after a cold. I really dread it and do anything to avoid getting colds. I'm dosing up on elderberry cordial and rosehip syrup for the winter as per usual!
Grandmashazzie
I am a nurse too and one consultant I knew called these 'the cough of a 100 days' when all tests came back clear he said they just eventually disappear. Not much comfort what about trying a herbal/ homeopathic remedy are there any practitioners near you.I had great success with sons asthma a few years ago.One of the treatments was a strong smelling ointment from Germany sorry can't remember name but it settled his coughing fits. soapdragon
So sorry to hear about this - you must be really worried as Mum.....it comes with the job description tho and, as you have been reassured by Healthcare professionals, it sounds as though its an annoying aftermath. Personally, I'd give it another couple of weeks then ask for x rays/more follow up....tho it will hopefully have cleared up by then its good (and reassuring for you) to have a plan in place. Best to you and YS!
clucker1
Just a thought, manuka honey...not sure if that might help in a hot drink. My GP told me when I had a horrendous cough just to drink hot drinks and suck sweets all the time and all of that did help. Put manuka honey which I seem to remember has antibacterial thingies in it in my porridge. Thinking of you. Oh and a triple pillow at night helped too. Snowy
Poor thing, nothing worse than listening to a persistent cough! OH has one at the moment, post smokers cough. Driving me crazy! Poor ES - I have had that myself though, if I've had a cold, the cough seems to linger forever. One GP I worked with recommended an OTC cough syrup containing guaifenesin - said it was brilliant for suppressing those irritating coughs that should be long gone. It really worked as well. Hope it settles soon x
Egluntyne
Two of my children got whooping cough years ago, despite having been vaccinated. I wouldn't rule it out. They had some sort of swab taken to confirm. Turned out there was an unvaccinated child in my daughter's class who very generously brought it into school. One or two other vaccinated children got it too.
The Dogmother
I know how irritating it is Ali - Rosie was chesty and asthmatic as a smaller child, medication aside, we found great relief from steam inhaling twice a day (menthol & Eucalyptus in the water) and a damp towel with Olbas Oil on it over the radiator in her room. chickencam
My son had a cough that went on for the best part of two months when he was about 8, we took him to the doctor after about 4 weeks and he said that he could diagnose him with asthma, but that it would probably go on its own and we were just to keep an rye on him. It did eventually go, he still has a tendency to be chesty after a cold and recently had a croupy sounding cough for quite a few weeks after a cold, it was like living with a seal , but again it eventually went and he was well in himself. He is now 17. Hope that your son's cough improves soon.
Alis girls
Thanks everyone - as I type he is coughing away. Had second antibiotic today - I think cough is a bit loser. Hes on Clarithromycin which is disgusting leaves a metalic taste in mouth. I have given him sweets to suck and have humidifier on and have bough industrial amounts of Actimel for his tum as I know these antib's can cause upset tums. Its the fact that so far nothing seems to work and the GP a good doctor is flummoxed. If its whooping cough the school will have to know. These parents who dont vaccinate there kids annoy me so much. But I wont get on my soapbox. If no better by Friday it will be hospital. Keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for good wishes. Ali x
The Dogmother
Have you taken him off dairy products?
sadietoo
So sorry to hear the cough is dragging on I agree with DM and would try to avoid dairy to see if that helps and also we find Orange juice can over excite those mucus producing cells in our family ( sorry if that is too much detail). We firmly believe in garlic as a cure all here , indeed it is our creed, Best eaten fresh (humous, tsatziki, a raw clove rubbed on freshly toasted sourdough with a drizzle of olive oil). Sneak it in to his diet and he won't even notice he's being medicated! Hope he's feeling better soon x
Purplemaniacs
I hope he is feeling better soon. I had a cough like that 9 years ago it started early November and was still there at Christmas, it was so annoying both for me and everyone else A couple of years ago a friend said Vicks vapour rub but rub it into the soles of your feet when you go to bed. I have tried it and it did seem to make it a bit better, not sure if it did or if I just thought it did but it may be worth a try Chrissie
Mrs Webmuppet
My beekeeping trainer swears by propolis liquid for coughs, having checked Holland and Barrett's site, they appear to sell it. I used propolis on my cold sores and they soon vanished. Proper honey ( as in bought from a beekeeper or farmers market NOT the supermarket processed stuff) is good for such ailments too. The Dogmother
I always give Rosie a teaspoon of local, organic honey at night if she has a cold.
Cinnamon
Both of my daughters (older teens) have had nasty coughs for weeks on end - my eldest has just had a chest x-ray & we are awaiting the results. Both have had antibiotics, which have not really helped. There are some real nasties out there at the moment....a colleague at work has had a cough for months (or so it seems, when I am sitting near her!) Alis girls
Yes I put garlic in home made soups plus onions (he hates onion) but soups disguise it. The only dairy hes having is Actimel as the clarithromycin (and I know from experience) gives u a gippy tum so it puts some good bacteria back. Frankly I'm glad hes eating. I can say I am at the end of my tether. Last night he went to casualty as so upset by cough he got himself in a state. OH panics and I have asked for a half day at work tommorrow which will make me popular as I have to cancel patients. My son doesnt enjoy school and having so much time off doesnt help. The school hassel you for proof of seeing GP etc. i am hoping they find something in the tests, it will shut school up. OH said they can off - why do men resort to bad language. thank goodness I can come on here and rant. Sorry for that. Wish everyone better.
