Cinnamon
I am off to have an eye check today, as I have noticed that I need to hold newspapers further & further away from me to be able to focus on them. Having always had great eyesight, I guess this is down to the ageing process Anyhow, I have NO IDEA what sort of glasses will suit me. I am having the test at Boots, but whenever my daughter had to get glasses from there, we were always really left to pick some ourselves - I need advice! Are any of the other high street opticians better at giving you advice as to what suits & what does not? Also are any giving better deals on glasses, does anyone know? bluekarin
I go to Specsavers as it is cheaper than most places, and they do offers of free prescription sunglasses with a pair of their normal glasses. I like the fact that the price on the glasses is the price you pay, apart from some extras like anti scratch and various other films. If you are after more of a personalised service, then the smaller more independent opticians are your best bet. I have never had help choosing glasses and it is a nightmare as I can barely see without mine That said, they usually suit me. I am currently wearing rimless ones which are great and from a distance it doesn't look like I am wearing any I did use to go to Boots, but they had a really creepy optician who we didn't get on with so we left. Patricia W
I've used Vision Express for the last 15 years or so. I have hard contact lenses plus prescription glasses for emergencies as I wear the lenses all day every day. And I use reading glasses with the contact lenses. I've always had very good service. One thing to know is that you don't need to buy the glasses from the optician who tests you. You can take the prescription and shop around. And if all you need are reading glasses, I'd buy the cheapo ones. The ones I have now are £3.99 from a local store, and are great. I have had them for £1.99 before now so these are relatively expensive for me! Have fun!
Cinnamon
Ok, I am back & the glasses are ordered. Got them from Boots in the end, who were actually excellent & really helped me decide which ones to get. I got another pair free. They are just for reading, so I won't use them much, & I won't need them for work either. Apparently my distance vision is perfect (nice to be perfect in something!) I did look at the off the shelf reading glasses, but my prescription is too low for them ...maybe one day! It's all a bit of a relief really, as I was dreading finding out that I had some awful eye illness or something, as I am VERY queasy about eyes, but I got a clean bill of health
Cinnamon
Ok, I am back & the glasses are ordered.Got them from Boots in the end, who were actually excellent & really helped me decide which ones to get. They had a dedicated girl who helps you choose the right frames for your face.... I got another pair free too. They are just for reading, so I won't use them much, & I won't need them for work either. Apparently my distance vision is perfect (nice to be perfect in something!) Next time I will shop around a bit more, now that I know what sort of thing suits me. I did look at the off the shelf reading glasses, but my prescription is too low for them ...maybe one day! Eggasperated
Glad your experience wasn't too bad and that there's no other problems with your eyes ; reading glasses seem to come to us all eventually . I use Boots as I fell out with Specsavers over the cost of repairs to some glasses; my Boots is quite small and seems to give a more personal experience, depends where you live I guess. I do agree about choosing shapes that suit you it can be quite difficult but I've never had a pair that looked really awful.
Patricia W
When you start breaking/losing them (like me!) and your prescription fits, graduate to the cheapos! It's so nice to know that's all it is so great you can relax now.
chickencam
I used vision express for years but I didn't like he fact that the optician wouldn't listen to me about varifocals and when he finally did some for me they were useless. I went to Boots two years ago and got a half rimless pair with titanium frames, they broke at the nose bridge after 9 months and they replaced them, they went again last week after just over a year and they replaced them very quickly no questions asked. I think that they must have had problems with this style which is their own. I do however like them and I have had pretty good service after an initial longish wait for first pair. soapdragon
I am still hanging in in there using Poundland reading glasses but will have to give in to varifocals at some point in the near future...just so bloomin' expensive! OH calls me Jenny...after Jenny Murray who always has a pair of glasses perched on the end of her nose as do I now! I wouldn't mind too much as I do admire her but I am prob a few stone lighter (sorry, Jenny ) I am dreading the whole 'wearing glasses all the time due to old age' thing so will hold on till the last poss moment
freddie
I have prescription glasses for reading/computer work too, my arms just aren't long enough any more... I do possess a couple of prs of the cheapy ones at 1.25 strength, in cases, to live in the car/in my bag, as then I always have a pair around when needed!! Just a thought!! Alis girls
I lost my second pair about a month after having paid a small fortune for 2 pairs. I was told off by the man in the opticians for not having a spare pair. I now need another test and am fed up with specs (for reading only and computer at home and work) and mine sit on my head. OH said I look intelligent Sadly the blond hair lets me down I am thinking of contacts but not sure if I could put them in. I too am squeamish about eyes. Grandmashazzie
I'm with you Freddie. My first glasses were dear enough I just need them for reading I left them somewhere in first month, second pair the same.So I buy Poundland easy readers and keep them in bag,car etc and Definately if in restaurant use them for menu as its so easy to leave them on the table. newcountrygirl
haha Cinnamon - you dont need reading glasses! Just do what I did - get a kindle and then you can increase the fontsize! (just joking) - My daughter says I am getting to be a right old biddy - cos she caught me reading mine with larger text!

(just joking) I have got a Kindle, have had for years - its for newspapers & magazines that I need it for, as I don't read those on my Kindle. Patricia W
There are some really funky £3.99 ones in our local cheap shop so I have a blue pair, a red pair, a gold pair... and use whichever pair I happen to find at the time! And if I can't find any of them, ( or grandchildren break them), out I can go and buy another pair without breaking the bank.
Cinnamon
The 'off the shelf' ones do not come in my prescription, according to Boots

I convinced myself for ages that it was instructions on packets that were getting smaller not my eyes but finally got fed up of not being able to locate the magnifying glass I keep. Poor son has to sometimes read instructions to me. Lol
