patsylabrador
I struggle in the summer with the skin on my face. I tan well and go quite a nice colour which matches my freckles. Quite happy about that BUT if I get caught unprotected in the sun my face gets very red and quite painful even if I've smothered myself in sun cream. I hate it and it makes me cross, after all, who wants to look like an uncomfortable beetroot. OH suggested a hat but although that would shade my eyes it wouldn't protect my face. In desperation to stop my intense complaining he ordered me a beautiful red parasol which has UV protection. It looks lovely and I know in other parts of the world it is sensible and usual. I will use it because it is the sensible option but not many people do in England so I think i'll feel a bit silly at first. When I went to MK Bowl to see Haim it was very hot and sunny and lots of people had umbrellas which made me think of getting a parasol. Willow
How odd, I've been browsing looking at parasols today. I don't tan so I do need to protect myself from the sun. I've ordered a pretty umbrella that would double as a parasol but not sure if I would feel too silly using it as a parasol , probably depends where I was. I saw a few parasols at Henley regatta today and they looked lovely and elegant and not at all out of place.
WitchHazel
What a great idea! Patsylabrador, can you send me a link to the one you bought please? Willow, where have you been looking? I just did a quick google and, when I had removed the garden variety, the site I found seemed horrendously expensive. Thanks
Willow
We may both have found the same parasol Hazel http://www.dotcomgiftshop.com/edwardian-parasol-red I browsed ebay and amazon but tbh there wasn't a great choice.
Olly
I've used an umbrella when I found myself out in the sun unexpectedly without shade. Yes it felt a bit odd, but I have very fair skin that burns in minutes - I always sit or stand in shade if I can, or wear high factor sun cream. I decided feeling a bit conspicuous at a country show was preferable to even more sun damage on my face. Go for it Patsy - with all the warnings about sun exposure, a parasol sounds like a sensible way to go.
WitchHazel
That's a better price! I was on brolliesgalore, and the ones I saw were £100 or so. I've since looked at other pages on their website and they have some cheaper.
patsylabrador
This is it on Amazon. Won't get it for a week or two. link
WitchHazel
Ooh, very like! Especially like the underside. In my five minutes thinking about parasols, I've decided it's important that it doesn't look in any way shape or form like a brolly. It needs to look different enough so that people don't ask why I'm carrying an umbrella. And if it's going to look different, it might as well look very different. Hmmm...I can feel an urge coming on.
bluekarin
I think if you have a problem with the sun like that then don't worry about what other people think. They will look at you funny if you have the beetroot face so you can't really win with them I love parasols. I have a couple of Indian paper ones which are very fragile. As I have sun sensitive skin, I really should sue one myself. I get a rash if I go out in it and don't wear sun cream. I have seen this one after a quick online search which is really pretty and not too cumbersome http://www.amazon.co.uk/Arrival-Protection-Umbrellas-Umbrella-Protected/dp/B00CDH2PCE/ref=pd_cp_lp_0 This one is pretty but no uv protection http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Victorian-Lace-Parasol-Light/dp/B002JVCB4Q/ref=pd_cp_lp_1 There are all manor of parasols here! http://www.pamelasparasols.com/New2010/index.html
Chickendoodle
What a brilliant idea. I usually wear a hat in the sun but end up with the dreaded hat hair. It would also be an amazing present for my sister, who has everything (apart from a parasol) and takes lots of holidays
Alis girls
A lot of Japanese and Chinese women use umbrellas round here when sun is out. At first I was puzzled as I couldnt feel any rain but then realised its to keep sun off. No wonder they have nice skin
Lavenders_Blue
I didn't realise until I looked at this thread that I NEED a parasol Preferably a nice, frilly, white Mary Poppins parasol. Don't worry what other people think about it - carry your parasol with confidence and you will look amazing! (Maybe accessorize with a wicker basket?!) Willow
I had bought a nice hat for my cousins wedding yesterday and I was worried about ruining my hat if it rained. Since my red umbrella/parasol hadn't turned up in time I bought this http://www.johnlewis.com/lisbeth-dahl-ruffle-umbrella-black-cream/p231667961it's very pretty and summery. Could be used as parasol for shade as well as sheltering from showers.
Lavenders_Blue
Willow, that umbrella is beautiful and far too lovely to be used for rainy days, it is most definitely a parasol (of the Mary Poppins type, oh and I just happen to have some John Lewis vouchers...NO, I MUST RESIST! )
WitchHazel
That's really pretty! I'm beginning to wonder if I've been taken over by aliens. I've not been attracted to girly frippery things since I was about 17, but I've now bought two (yes, two) parasols, different styles and colours (one blue, one red) for different types of outfits. And I'm finding myself admiring the parasol choices of others. Where is Hazel, and what have I done with her? The parasols haven't arrived yet. I can't imagine what DH will say when he sees them, much less what he will say when he realises that I really will be going outside, in public, with them. With him. Saronne
It was a very sunny day in London last week when I was there for the day. Loads of women had parasols. They all looked very elegant.

Valkyrie
Oooh I like the stripey My Fair Lady one. Bloyme guvna! I have a Canadian brolly with a dream catcher pattern on it - present from my cuz - and we went on a river trip altogether a few years back. I took it just in case it rained. It didn't - it was very hot and I was burning so I used the brolly as a parasol and I'm so glad I did! Although nowadays I seem to be hardened pretty much to burning - old aged and weathered look for me it seems. Still wear baseball caps pretty much all the time though. I do like the straw big brimmed ones though.
patsylabrador
I got mine today. I wear unfussy clothes but like my accessories to be fussy so this is perfect for me. Hot and sunny weekend too (today is our Friday) parasol
