kazmac
Am scottish and a too am a pedant wen it come's too bad spelin and puctation. Drivs me nutz!!!! Seriously, though, it drives me mad when folk don't spell correctly or when they use poor grammar. One of my pet hates is also here / hear, there / their, your / you're. I also hate when colleagues and friends write things like "I thought of you when I seen this" ..... Or "Guess what I done last night?" Or "I've went and done something daft" I could go on ....... patsylabrador
One of the reasons I didn't respond to this post is that I agree but I know my sentence construction can go a bit awry. I put words in odd places and that's how I talk too, I don't know why but it happens. Glaringly obvious bad grammar bothers me too - I borrowed him my 'whatever ' - really grates. You didn't borrow him nuffin', you lent it.
The Dogmother
I try to be tolerant (honestly I do!) but some things try me, especially when it's in a professional context. 'Could of', instead of 'could have' Why on earth do folks say 'I just had to itch that mozzie bite'? Surely you'd scratch it? My grandma was Italian and not a native English speaker, but she took it upon herself to learn correct English, and would always correct us as children; my favourite saying of hers was "you can, but you mayn't"
chickencam
Of instead of have really annoys me. How do you all feel about this one? My mother would always correct me when I said that something was different to rather than different from. She always said that something couldn't be different towards something it had to be away from, if you get my meaning. I have always used different from because of this, but have argued with my OH about it. Punctuation is something that I would love to improve upon. The Dogmother
I was always told 'different from' or 'opposite to' as well Liz. I think the lunch, dinner, supper, tea debate is largely regional, but school dinners will always be just that
chickencam
The meal terms are definitely regional. I grew up with dinner in the middle of the day, which was always a cooked meal, and tea in the late afternoon which was usually sandwiches or eggs. My family are for the East Midlands. Purplemaniacs
now I'm terrified of spelling and punctuating incorrectly Me too. Chrissie
Lavenders_Blue
I am a total grammar pedant too. Most of the time I try not to let it irritate me too much (for example, a spelling mistake or grammatical error on the forum won't particularly bother me) but I cannot abide poor spelling or grammar in a professional context. It's totally unnecessary. Text speak is another thing entirely and I really don't see the point of it. I realise it started when text messages were limited to 160 characters to save space, but nowadays texts can be any length and, for the majority of people, free as part of a contract, so there's no need. With predictive text on phones, it's actually more time consuming to write in text speak, never mind how long it takes me to decipher one of these messages if I'm unfortunate enough to receive one
The Dogmother
Don't laugh L_B; I received a text the other day - in text speak - and had to read it out loud in order to understand it!
Lavenders_Blue
I had one where I ended up phoning the sender and asking her what on earth her message said. I couldn't work it out at all!
Cat tails
I have an Irish colleague and whenever she will text me, I have to start googling stuff... Really can't work out what she means sometimes...
