They are home!

Recommended Posts

Will post a couple of pics later but they are home.

I changed my mind and 2 of them chose us. The Withy Sussex who likes OH but nervous of me, the Withy Copper came to us. The Copper kept coming up to me. She looked half asleep and that did concern me a little but she was very settled and curious about me. He got her out and handled her and she perked up. I initially chose another Copper but she kept coming up to me, looking at me and OH said he preferred her. We might have made a mistake let's hope not.

We also got a nice looking Bluebell who seems very bright. Worked out the roosting bars and food immediately. Finally I said to OH "That's a Columbine which is a Cotswold Legbar hybrid and will lay green or blue eggs". He said it was a fabulous colour and we she get it. He liked the amber but his grandad kept Light Sussex so thought it would be nice to have.

To be honest, the guy was extremely knowledgeable and spoke at length about the birds and Talked about everything from mites to Wind eggs. We have a 28 day guarantee on the birds and he said any problems and we should get back to him. I get the feeling from research that he is a reputable seller and would not knowingly sell sick birds.

Ooer, did you get them from the lovely man near Newdigate/Beare Green? We got our last lot from there including the purchase of Annie and Clarabelle. See other post on how did my greedy chicken do that? That was Miss Cleverclogs Annie who does lay lovely eggs and is a withy copper. Enjoy your chickens....you might get an egg soon....

Ha ha ha! Yes I think they might be awake before you.....though to be fair my lot only get up when it gets light and we now let them get up themselves up and they put themselves to bed. Enjoy your weekend. Yes, he is lovely....I seem to remember he is a retired bank manager or something like that.

They are very nervous. The Blue comes and talks to me. The Sussex is very nervy. The Columbine and the Copper are less active. The Copper keeps closing her eyes. I know she's sick. I shouldn't have got her I picked the other initially but OH talked me into her and Columbine. They were wormed at the beginning of the month. I am so stupid. I saw her closing her eyes and I let him change my mind.

Chicken watching isn't easy as the dog is screaming the house down to see them.

Cleaned them out. All poos seemed normal. I was kept company by the Blue.

I will say this, the Copper is responsive to noises.

Chicken keeper: Fail. :(

Chicken keeper: Fail. :(

No PixieDust - Chicken keeper : new and caring.

If you really think she might be poorly it might be worth keeping her separate from the others for a while whilst you keep an eye on her. Make sure she's eating and drinking. If you really think she's not right, I know it'll be hard already as you say she seemed to choose you, but you may have to call the breeder and swap her.

Please don't feel like you've failed. You've noticed that something isn't normal so you're succeeding. I found the first few weeks exciting but also very difficult and stressful because the girls took way longer than I expected to settle down together.

Hope she perks up

Thank you :)

I will upload some more pics. The Copper watches me constantly. I bit the bullets and gave them some meal worms. She was the first to them followed by the Blue and the Sussex. Columbine is sort of keeping herself to herself but did come and get a few.

When they came out of the house this morning it was Blue, Copper, Sussex then Columbine. Is Blue the top of the pecking order? They were all run together previously. They also stick to the pairs that they came home in the boxes. They don't seem to be fighting.....yet.

I hope I am worrying for nothing. I know stressed birds can sometimes look sleepy. She is preening too.

If she is bad tomorrow I will email the bloke.

PixieDust. All your birds are inoculated and will be prone to virus flare-ups when stressed for up to two years. This is nothing to worry unduly about. Some handle it better than others. Once they have settled in they will all be fine. The stress is caused in this case by moving to a new home, new keepers and new everything. Just keep an eye on them as you are doing and make sure they all drink.

Our neighbour bought some new hens a few days ago. They looked really heathy, but next day I thought one was was dying! Standing hunched up, tail down and struggling to breathe. Today she is fine and walking about looking as healthy as when she arrived.

We just got them to bed. The Copper was already roosting. The other 3 tried escaping through the roof  I managed to get the Columbine in through the door. OH helped as the Bluebell slipped my grip. She refused to be put in the pop hole so we popped her in through the roof. The same for the Sussex. I don't know if we did that right. Dog spent half an hour in utter panic because he heard them flapping. He's still panicking.

Day 1 finished. Not too disasterous!

Lovely chooks! Am always a tad jealous when I see new ones. The chooks will settle just fine in a few days, if your like me you watch them constantly at first but it's amazing the inbuilt instinct they have for knowing where to go and what to do re food/bedtime plus pecking order to be established even in a small flock. Always one bossy boots and one bottom of the heap but it's how they work. You enjoy them, and the lovely eggs you will get sometime soon :)
