quickcluck
Wellllll.... went to my first class last night, given and hook and chose a bright pink wool!!! Almost had 1:1 attention - very embarassing, but in the 2 hours I managed to a piece 3inches long and 2 inches high using 3 stitches and looking very uneven! I've discovered I am not that co ordinated in the hand department However, I will practice at home and look at getting a book to help, they recommend http://www.amazon.co.uk/Crochet-Basics-step---step-first-time/dp/1782491422/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1422965617&sr=8-2&keywords=crochet+books any other recommendations before I choose??? jimnpaula
Crochet Unravelled: A Clear and Concise Guide to Learning Crochet by Claire Bojczuk I've just had a look at the link I posted earlier and the little paperback book is how much? £22? That's mad, but I would still recommend it if you can get it for a better price.
bluekarin
This is the one I borrowed from the library, and eventually bought. It has lovely clear photos which really does help, and it doesn't go on and on about each stitch which some books seem to do and make the stitches more complicated than they are. I also have another which has the American stitch instructions, so depending on which pattern, I use a different book. That way I don't end up doing the wrong one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Learn-Crochet-diagrams-instructions-projects/dp/1904485324/ref=sr_1_25?ie=UTF8&qid=1422983712&sr=8-25&keywords=crochet+books
Luvachicken
So glad your class went well quickcluck I'm still practising the first stich I learnt. Not sure if I have enough confidence to try another one - I didn't like the treble stich I think it was. So some books might be a good idea
quickcluck
I don't seem to be able to keep straight edges. Very frustrating. No matter which stitch!
jimnpaula
http://www.mooglyblog.com/ Moogly has some great ideas to help with keeping straight edges, chainless yarn joining..all sorts of things, and she does photo and video tutorials. quickcluck
Thanks! Have ordered a book, so hopefully I will stop making triangles!!! It seems to be when I change stitches....
Cat tails
When you are doing a square, make sure you add a single chain at the end of the row before you turn. This prevents you from shortening your row with every turn. With a single crochet, it's a single chain at the end. With a double it's two chains, etc.

Groovychook
I only began to click with crochet when I started working in the round... The spaces seemed more 'obvious' somehow. In no time at all, I'd made a granny square
quickcluck
My sides are beginning to get straighter, I keep missing the last stitch! I can understand why the spaces may seem more obviously if it's round, but no idea how to do that either
Cat tails
Round is super easy! Google magic circle (which makes life much easier, this one is quite clear) and go! There is no turning your work and sticking your hook in from the front is easier too.
quickcluck
Not quite a flower, but i'm not too upset with it....
Cat tails
You got me all inspired again. Have a colleague who is having a baby soon, so needed to get some baby presents finished. I'm planning to also make a pair of baby booties that look like wellies.

bluekarin
Looking good! This is what I have been working on recently. It's from a CAL (crochet along) called Sophie's universe, this photo is up to the end of week 2 and am currently working on week 3's before tomorrow's instalment comes out. It is a little fiddly, but the pattern is written so well with fab diagrams and tips, so as long as your count is right, it will come right. Just think, you'll be able to make something like this soon! There are a few in the group who have only been crocheting a month or so and are doing beautiful ones
Cat tails
Wow that looks beautiful Karin! What will it be? Do you know already?
bluekarin
Thank you I will probably be stopping at the end of this weeks as running out of yarn and I want to make it into a cushion cover. The actual CAL goes on for 20 weeks, so will be interesting to see what it turns into at the end.
