Car tax question

Recommended Posts

OK, so I get the new car tax system without discs to prove you've paid - can't see it working though - but how does this work with foreign cars which are 'resident' over here? It occurred to me today; our town has a high population of mainland European nationals, mainly French and eastern European. A neighbour, who I really like, and I disagree on one point... they don't pay road tax here in the UK, despite being resident here for more than 6 years  their opinion is that they've never been asked or chased about it, but would pay if asked.

Does anyone know the official stand point on this, and how it would work with the new number plate recognition system? I'm not about to start an argument with them, I am just curious.

It does naff me off too; I might get one of my friends from the local station to have a quiet word with them. It just irks me that we are paying to keep the roads maintained and safe, while they aren't. I'd love to know what percentage of 'resident' mainland European cars are actually taxed under the UK road tax system.

Fred; would they be picked up by the plate recognition system?

When you register your foreign car with the DVLA, you will get UK plates.

You can usually use a vehicle with non-UK number plates without needing to tax or register it in the UK if all of the following apply:

  1. you’re visiting and don’t plan to live here
you only use the vehicle up to 6 months in a 12-month period (one single visit, or several shorter visits adding up to a 6-month period)
the vehicle is registered and taxed in its home country

You must tax and register your vehicle in the UK within 14 days if you become a resident or your stay is longer than 6 months.

Don't you also need a UK driving license if you have lived here for over a year ?

No, not if they are from the European Union. A driving licence from an EU country is valid anywhere in the EU until it's expiry date.

How do they get insurance for something that hasn't been taxed ?

You don't need to show proof of VED to get insurance. You do need to show proof of insurance to get VED however.

I knew french people who did this and I tm sure they went home once a year and taxed theirs in france - he was working full time over here and did not pay our tax - it annoyed the hell out of me too. It should not be allowed - in fact he is still working here albeit down south.

sadly that legal under EU law there's one or 2 UK haulage companies that have depots in France and use them as 'home ' depots for some of their fleet to save money on VED and fuel

I thought this was one of the things the government was cracking down on now - but possibly only targeting certain areas where they know there is a high number of foreign cars.

it's supposed to be but as the

UK Government is obsessed with using technology instead of 'bodies on the ground'. if the vehicle hasn't got a valid UK address then there's virtually no chance of cracking down on the problem as a few EU states won't pass on the vehicle owners details to the UK authorities
