Hi everyone. I have very kindly been given the choice of two or three I year old Wyandotte bantams. I wondered if I could mix them with White stars (pol). Should I get 1 whitestar and 3 wyandottes. Or 2 of each. Not sure of the size difference.

Would the wyandottes be less prone to being bullied as they are 1 year old. On the other hand would the wyandottes gang up on 1 whitestar.

What's people's experiences with these breeds, am I worrying unnecessarily.

I haven't mixed hybrids with pure breeds / bantams, but I do have little Pekins with bigger Wyandotte bantams.

 

When I got them all, the Pekins were only ten weeks but the Wyandottes were already 18 months. Even though they were next to each other at all times it took AGES before I could safely put them all together, and even now the

Pekins are badly bullied from time to time.

 

I would think that an adult Wyandotte bantam would hold her own against a hybrid pullet, but you never really know until you try it because all individuals are different.

 

If you are going to mix them I old say two of each. That way whichever way it goes, each chook has a buddy.

Hi i did have two marran batams with two hybirds a ranger and a amber star.they were fine.hybirds were 1year old and my battams came from my grandma who was to old to look after them anymore one mum and a 1 year old. No problems just put them together at night and the next day let them out and all was well. Till mr fox came! Now i just have hybirds as i found the batams went broody most of the summer and i wanted more eggs. Hope that helps

Thankyou for the replies. I will be getting the wyandottes this weekend but the White stars aren't available for 2 weeks. I will have 2 weeks to think about it . I will try and post pictures when they arrive.

I've 2 Wyandotte bantams with my hybrids. One is top dog the other bottom, don't know how that happened so it doesn't really help but yes they mix fine.

Thankyou, fingers crossed then, the White star is supposed to be dainty in size so hopefully size difference won't be an issue, it will be down to temperement.

What colour wyandottes?

Think they are gold lace. They are from a friend who has a small holding. She has a cockerel and occasionally has to downsize her hens. Hopefully I will be able to post pics when they arrive.

The different sizes can be mixed, but I'd always advise caution and a long introduction.

 

White stars can be a bit 'ornery at times, so you'll need to keep a careful eye or bumpa bit the 'uns to be on the safe side.

 

I saw the sad results of a mis-managed introduction the other week; someone had tried to introduce one new bird into an existing flock without the recommended isolation first, and the poor thing had been set-upon... it was a bad mess

Thankyou, I will certainly take care when I introduce them. I have seperate temporary sleeping areas and run dividers at the ready. Might order some bumpa bits as well.

I'd just keep it slow and keep an eye on them and you'll be fine. If you let them get the squaring up and eyeballing done while you have them separated I've found it all less traumatic for them.

Made the pic smaller twice but they won't post smaller. As you can see I got it wrong, as usual, they are not Wyandottes, obviously, they are very lovely, very friendly Dutch Bantams. Will try to resize again. Followed the sticky and downsized the pics to one size above thumbnail so can't understand it. The other 2 girls are pale buff.

You might want a different drinker for your little ladies, my pekins couldn't get on with the glug Of course you might have one already and I just can't see it

Thankyou, I didn't know she was a partridge. I put a house brick in front of the glug for them to stand on. This worked for the last bantams but I will keep an eye on them to make sure they are drinking.

First day and lucky enough to have an egg. Showed next to a standard egg from our local farm shop hens, free range of course.

Thankyou plum. They are lovely. Been hand feeding them sweet corn today. The younger ones make a lovely peep peep sound. They don't seem to bok. The older one announced when she laid her egg but she also makes a peep sound, just slightly deeper. It's very endearing. They let me stroke them as well .

My Wyandotte bantams are separate from my hybrids. My White Star type are very flighty never managed to make friends with them but they do lay lovely large pure white eggs. They are slight birds much thinner than my other hybrids. I have had two of them but now just have the one.

 

My Wyandottes manage a glug but it is not a superglub just the eglu classic one.

Whilst checking the website for the White Stars yesterday I noticed it said available. They weren't supposed to be untill the second week in May. With great trepidation I picked up 2 beautiful little girls. I had read hundreds of posts on introductions and was very worried. I placed the girls in the run and waited, for 3 hours, with a water spray.

I found out who is top hen I think, 'but I only had to spray her 3 times for having a peck.

I had sprayed all the girls with a very dilute solution of white vinegar with the mist setting of the sprayer before adding the white stars. I read this made them smell the same so could help.

I then had to go on the school run, so I put a pallet in to divide the girls. Came back from school to find all the girls jumping up onto the pallet then off again, back and forth, into both sides of the run, they thought it was great fun.

Very early days but am keeping a very close eye and ear on them. I did wonder, with the bantams being from a farm with cockerels, as well as hybrids if they are used to been ruled over by a cockerel.

I did notice that the farm had white geese as well so could they mistake the White stars for geese, they did all free range together on the farm. Plus the fact I only got the bantams Saturday afternoon.
