AndyRoo
So we've finally gotten to the part of the process where we're looking to complete. Looks like we might be moving w/e either the 23rd or the 30th! Woo hoo. I think it's going to be slightly too late in the year to get chickens for eggs, but I can always start planning for spring! chooksRCute
Exciting/frenetic times ahead You'll have plenty of time to design your chicken set-up

AndyRoo
Thanks all. I am moving from Swindon to Bristol, so not too far in terms of driving. About 40 minutes, tops. The area in the garden that I want to place the chickens on currently has an ugly, unused shed which needs a good tearing down, so I'll need to do that. As for work around the house, we have the following on our checklist: - Tear down shed (as above) - Remove 30ft of old worn out decking, hopefully to reveal decent patio below - Re-landscape 100ft garden - Replace some garden fencing - Repair said patio if things are looking rough - Tear down garage which has seen better days and replace with something new - Tear down current conservatory and replace with either large kitchen extension, or modern orangery: whichever is more cost-effective wins - Regardless of option above, replace with more modern kitchen - Completely re-do bathroom - Build front porch - Replace worn out carpets with decent wood flooring throughout: possibly sand down and re-varnish original flooring, if it should even still exist and be in good condition - Remove the existing wallpaper, re-finish the walls, and then paint them all - Add new power sockets - Replace a couple of existing chandeliers with something more modern: the current ones look like they belong in a gothic castle during a seance! - Replace or fix the existing windows: the tenants in the house before have obviously knackered the current ones somehow; some won't open, others will open, but the handles are loose! - Replace current fitted wardrobes with some more modern ones - Have the gas fire removed and replace with log burner - failing that, have it removed altogether - Build a loft conversion - Sort out area for chickens - Paint exterior of house to be a nice white colour again ...and then after all that, create world peace. All of the garden work will definitely be done by me. It will be nice and simple: a few borders with fruit trees, and some with shrubs. Basically anything that can pretty much take care of itself. Most of it either evergreen or perennial so that I don't have to get too involved. I was thinking about keeping bees too, but I don't think the neighbours will like me very much for that, so I might leave well enough alone! AndyRoo
Not much then.... Nope. Should be a breeze! lol We did have one weird thing happen today, though: the guy we're buying from has asked if he can keep his advertising board for his company on the front gate if he gives us £100 a month!?!? I am now wondering who else I can rent advertising space to! lol
mullethunter
Sounds similar to our place. In the 6 weeks before we moved in we stripped wallpaper from everywhere upstairs, refinished walls and painted, stripped the downstairs hall walls refinished and painted, ripped up the carpets and recarpeted all of upstairs and stairs and carpeted over horrid cheap veneer floor in the hall. In the first couple of months we lived here my dad entirely replaced our upstairs bathroom. Amazing progress. That was a year ago. Since then we've done...nothing Will be cutting loft hatch to put in insulation in the next couple of weeks. Our outstanding list is :- Totally re-do downstairs shower room Totally re-do horrible 80s kitchen Strip (woodchip) wallpaper, re-finish and paint living room Strip wallpaper re-finish and paint downstairs bedroom Paint hallway ceilings Hang pictures Renew decking Enlarge pond The plan is to live here until OH retires - that's 18 years - not sure if we'll be finished in time! AndyRoo
Blimey get packing! Good luck. You'll be able to get your girls soon. I think the girls may be shuffling further down the list of 'to do's'. As I am not sure I'd get many eggs from them at this point in the year, I might just have to hang on until the spring - as much as I don't want to! mullethunter
I can't remember what you decided, but you'd get plenty of eggs from hybrids all winter
AndyRoo
I can't remember what you decided, but you'd get plenty of eggs from hybrids all winter Oh, yes, I do remember being told that - but then I'd also read in several places that I wouldn't get that many, and now I don't know what to do. I suppose I could order a Cube and a small run extension and just get two hens until spring... although I'd have to find a space to dedicate to them in the garden until then. Cat tails
Take your time. Getting 2 and having to do introductions and all might be tricky. And you can get chickens year round at some places. Especially hybrids. (At least in the Netherlands) And you never know, they might do a nice discount on the old cubes at one point. You have time to wait for that.

(At least in the Netherlands) I agree I think getting more at a later date would be a good idea. This gives you plenty of time to sort your house and get the garden ready. I got mine in early February so you wouldn't have to wait until Spring has arrived properly, and I got an egg the very next day so didn't have to wait that long. I hope all goes well for you on Friday
AndyRoo
Yeah, I think I might hold off until I can get things set up properly. I do have a little moving update - I have currently pack about 7 boxes, several pieces of art, and wrapped up some electronics which I no longer have the boxes for, and I am already considering licking a light socket to end my misery! God, I had forgotten how much I hate moving house!!
Ursula123
I Feel your pain Andyroo, we have a completion date for 28th September, although getting the first person in the chain to agree to exchange is proving a nightmare. I spent today emptying the loft, have packed up a couple of the bedrooms but have to say I am losing the will and may join you at the light socket. We are moving into rented and I can't take the girls, they are going to in laws so will still be able to see them.
AndyRoo
Oh, well your situation sounds a bit more stressful than mine, so maybe I shouldn't complain! We have now managed to pack about 20 boxes and dismantle several bits of furniture, so at least we are making some headway. The removals bloke did think we may need to make 2 trips between the house and our storage locker... Clearing out does give you some perspective though: I keep going through things and opening boxes and going "what the...?" I can't tell you why, but I can tell you at some point over the last 7 years I have somehow become the proud owner of a crystal ball, and several vinyls despite not having a record player! soapdragon
Good luck to you both; hoping things go smoothly and that you have good weather (which makes a HUGE difference!)
