does anybody else know anything about the ban on citronella?

Recommended Posts

i went into my local pet store to get my bags of feed and bliss and noticed they didnt have the strong smell of citronella and cit written on the side. apparently this is their last stock of citronella as it is being banned, he said they are stopping citronella candles as well!! :?:?

does anybody know why. we are having some building work done so i dont have the room to stock up on bales but i might have to get some bottles of liquid citronella to make my own version to put on the bliss as i find it works well with the flies.

i havent noticed anything in the newspaper about it.

(bliss is like hemcore)

Actually when I was searching for a hemcore stockist in my area, the first farm shop said they don't stock anything treated with citronella, another said they weren't allowed to, and I finally found some hemcore although it doesn't say on it anywhere about it being treated with citronella and doesn't smell of it so I assume it's one of the new batches...

I might buy a couple more bottles of citronella oil if it looks like it's going to be banned completely, seems a shame, it does the job very well

It's because of the Biocidal Products Directive (1998). This is a kind of inverted habeas corpus for fly killers. All substances such as citronella are guilty unless proved innocent.

Tea tree oil will be the next to go, but I actually believe that is dangerous. (Everyone will come down on my head now). See "Tea tree oil faces ban over health fear" Holland & Barrett are selling it very cheaply at the moment, so it won't be long.

OK so if we are going to ban useful substances that in some circumstances might be dangerous lets ban petrol, cooking oil etc etc - no, lets take it further and ban guns, cars, pick axes, rope,...

Oh dear, I think I am getting a bit extreme in my old age.

But really.

oh noooo - I bought a bottle from Holland & Barrett to keep flies away from the Eglu, as advised on this forum; it was in my handbag when I went on holiday, and I found it absolutely brilliant as an insect repellent. I didn't get bitten once.

I'm going to rush round there to see if I can still buy another bottle!

There are so many genuinely dangerous products, why do they have to ban the most natural ones!! My GP once told me that if aspirin was discovered now, they probably wouldn't be allowed to give it out without a prescription.

I wonder if chemists will get round being able to sell it by not mentioning anything to do with insects on the bottle (the article says that you can still buy the candles providing it does not say it repells insects.

The one i bought from boots mentioned several benefits but nothing about being an insect repellent

fingers crossed thats the case!!

I just read that telegraph article and you will have no problem buying citronella at all so panic buying need not happen!

Its only illegal to sell it as an insect repellant, so whilst it may not be in the feed stores it will still be freely available elsewhere.

My mum only realised today that I was using it when she put some extra shredded paper out and found the paper in the bag in the shed smelled "lemony"! I've mentioned it to her several times.
