Coming Storm

Recommended Posts

Is it just me overreacting or is anyone else worried about the coming storm and their chickens? I can shut them in the eglu and hope for the best tonight, but I don't know whether to keep them in the run tomorrow and hope the roof holds, or whether they'd be safer out in the garden finding the most sheltered spot. I have horrible visions of the whole run taking off if it's as bad as has been forecast. What, if any, precautions are the rest of you taking? Please tell me I'm just being paranoid!

No your not being paranoid.

I'm worry about it too. I'm not worried about there coop flying away as its to heavy (wooden one), but i am worried there homemade run roof will fly off as its made from an old aluminum greenhouse roof with perspex on the top for shelter. Like you I'm just doing everything I can to it to make it more secure.

Lets just hope and  that its not going to be a bad as predicted.

Personally I would keep the chickens in the run. They will be safer there away from wind blown debris ( garden furniture, trampolines, fence panels, TV aerials, greenhouse doors etc. ). The chickens will probably retreat inside the Eglu if it gets really bad.

We have have some big gales this winter and the year before. A couple have been really scary

Move anything that might be blown about into a shed or garage, but put your car into the garage first :D

Hope the storm turns out to not so bad as forcast  and take care :)

I'm a bit worried. I remember the "hurricane". Where I live is sheltered (by a hill) from the worst of gales from the south-west but I am going to keep the chooks in the run and, if they don't think of going back into the eglu of their own accord when I think they would be wise to do so, I will put them back in.

I won't let them out of the run because of the danger of being hurt by being blown by a gust into something hard, like a wall or a tree. I am also going to find a way of pegging down the eglu.

Severe Gales 0001 Mon 10 0300 Tue 11

"The Met Office continues to expect an intense low pressure system to move east across the UK during Monday, bringing severe gales and potentially damaging gusts across some areas, more particularly the west and south of England and Wales. Southerly winds are expected to strengthen during the early hours of Monday to give severe gales for a time, coinciding with the morning rush hour in some areas. An additional swathe of severe westerly gales will follow through the morning and afternoon, principally affecting southwest England and the south coast of England. Gusts of 60 to 70 mph are likely with the possibility of 80 mph gusts on exposed coasts and hills. Disruption to transport and power supplies is possible and there may be damage to buildings and trees. In addition high waves and flooding may affect coastal areas in the south. This warning is likely to be superseded by FLASH messages.

Issued at: 1110 Sun 9 Mar"

I have the same worries and my girls are new and one is not well. :( They have the winter cover on at the moment do you think it would be wise to remove it for tonight and tomorrow to prevent lift off? I guess if it's that bad tomorrow they will be sensible and stay in the Eglu most of the day anyway?

I am also only 7 miles from the South coast so not looking forward to this at all.

I will also put more run pegs in tonight. Fingers crossed for the girls! Hope everyones chooks stay safe.

my eglus and runs have withstood 100 mph winds (December 06)

We went away in the caravan to Dartmoor and they were left at home alone.. :anxious: they were completely fine tho and the eglus never moved an inch!

Hi Chelsea,

Did you leave a cover on if you had an eglu?

Sarah

yes we had shower curtains and the winter shade securely on the runs when we went away. I have never witnessed winds like it - it was really bad - so if mine survived that then everyone's should be fine tonight.

It was bad enough here last week.

Someone else's bin lid landed in my garden.

You might get someone else's henhouse and chickens by tomorrow morning!

I might not want to give them back!....especially if it is a purple or lilac cube!

I hope everyone emerges unscathed.
