use by dates

Recommended Posts

got some sainsburys so organic sausages, just discovered use by date on them is the 23rd march

do you think they will be ok to cook - even if I cook them and give them to the dog?

or shall i throw them out?

I have already emailed Sainsburys, im getting a bit miffed about the length of their use by dates.

I will give them a good sniff then :D , they are sat on the draining board at the moment.

Get someone who doesn't know they are past their use by date to sniff them as well, you may be already biased against them, if you know what I mean

Tessa

wonder what next door would say if I rang the bell and said

"wanna sniff my bangers?!"

Were they out of date when you bought them?

If so you should contact the store & your local tradings standards as I'm pretty sure that Sainsburys is breaking the law.

you should also get at least a refund from Sainsburys.

Didnt cook them and didnt give them to the dog. Dunno whether it was my imagination but they didnt smell "sausagey"

I emailed Sainsburys and they are refunding me with the money for the sausages and for some cod that also went out of date 2 days after my shopping was delievered :) , which is good. Im usually very good at checking my dates when sainsbury's deliver but they normally put all the "shorter life" products in a blue bag to make you aware, but these products were in a normal bag.

I tend to assume that use by dates are based on the length of time they can reasonably assume the product will still be 100% fresh if handled as per the packaging instructions - they have to allow some leeway, otherwise a percentage of food would already be going off before the use-by date and they could get sued!

I always use my eyes and nose - stuff like pate goes off really quickly, especially once opened :vom:

I just came home with a few bits of shopping only to be told that the milk in the fridge is dated 22nd! Had I known that, I would have got some while I was out! Still smells fine though! I was told off for getting mouldy grapes the other day - not so - someone added grapes to my shopping list and they were in the fridge for a fortnight before they were discovered (in plain view along with a punnet of blueberries that had been pounced on) - what a waste.
