Egluntyne
I think they err on the side of caution. Not sure to be honest. I think if they look and smell OK ...... Always a risk though.
Laura & CTB
I wouldnt risk it - not for the sake of a couple of ££. If it was fillet steak well then...maybe

BarbaraJ
Would eat them if 1 day out, give them to the dog i'm sure they will be fine. Often you can smell if meat is off, i think they do have a few days after eat by BUT noone will tell you to eat them incase your sick! Up to you! Tessa the Duchess
I don't take much notice of use by dates, I use my nose I would definitely give them to the dog if they are only 2 days over. Tessa
chelsea
I will give them a good sniff then , they are sat on the draining board at the moment.
Tessa the Duchess
I will give them a good sniff then , they are sat on the draining board at the moment. Get someone who doesn't know they are past their use by date to sniff them as well, you may be already biased against them, if you know what I mean Tessa

Tessa Same here - dogs are able to digest rotting food so it shouldn't be a problem.

abwsco
Well, we'd eat them if they smelt alright I really do think they put use by dates on foods that they don't need to.

I have already emailed Sainsburys, im getting a bit miffed about the length of their use by dates. Were they out of date when you bought them? If so you should contact the store & your local tradings standards as I'm pretty sure that Sainsburys is breaking the law. you should also get at least a refund from Sainsburys. chickencam
I use my eyes and nose when deciding what to eat, sometimes you have something that is within its date but looks and smells dodgy, also think about how long it was out of the fridge between shops and home and what the temperature was during that time. chelsea
Didnt cook them and didnt give them to the dog. Dunno whether it was my imagination but they didnt smell "sausagey" I emailed Sainsburys and they are refunding me with the money for the sausages and for some cod that also went out of date 2 days after my shopping was delievered , which is good. Im usually very good at checking my dates when sainsbury's deliver but they normally put all the "shorter life" products in a blue bag to make you aware, but these products were in a normal bag. bronze
I'm like chickencam. I don't go by printed dates. I use my sense to check if food is edible. Printed dates are a relatively new thing yet people have used their noses etc to check if something is edible for hundreds of years.
Eyren
I tend to assume that use by dates are based on the length of time they can reasonably assume the product will still be 100% fresh if handled as per the packaging instructions - they have to allow some leeway, otherwise a percentage of food would already be going off before the use-by date and they could get sued! I always use my eyes and nose - stuff like pate goes off really quickly, especially once opened

Goosey Lucy
Having had a nasty bout of food poisoning, I'm afaird I'm in the 'If in doubt, bin it' club. I've also had this problem with Sainsburys. I now shop with Ocado. Not had a problem in over 6 months!
Valkyrie
I just came home with a few bits of shopping only to be told that the milk in the fridge is dated 22nd! Had I known that, I would have got some while I was out! Still smells fine though! I was told off for getting mouldy grapes the other day - not so - someone added grapes to my shopping list and they were in the fridge for a fortnight before they were discovered (in plain view along with a punnet of blueberries that had been pounced on) - what a waste.
