Tessa the Duchess
Bought a really nice jumper in a charity shop yesterday. It's made by a company called Recycled Amano. 45%wool, 35% cotton and 20%hemp. Turned the label over it says 'Dry Clean Only' Now I wash both wool and cotton with no disasters, so it must be the hemp that makes it dry cleanable only. Does anybody have any clothing made from hemp, and how do you clean it? Tessa
Yorkshire Pudding
This link http://store.hempest.com/catalog/hempfacts.php says hemp fabric is machine washable. I would guess it's the company playing safe because of the wool content, but like you I've washed wool and cashmere with no ill effects... if the jumper didn't cost a small fortune, I would risk a handwash myself! Lesley
...so would I - I think they just cover their backs most of the time.

Tessa the Duchess
Okey Dokie, I will go ahead and wash it, I can't see any reason not to. I've washed both silk and cashmere in the past and it all survived Thanks all Tessa

I intend to hand wash, so no spinning or wringing just squooshing gently Tessa Thats a level of domestic dedication I have never achieved, in my house if it canr survive the machine it goes in the charity bag. I always feel like an alien here, you can all bake cakes and handwash clothes and knit chicken jumpers and some of you even *breathing into paper bag* enjoy caravanning. I do wear crocs though

It goes in the washer ( & then usually into the charity bag ) I can only bake a cake with a mixer , & I have not knitted since I was about 11.I am going camping in the summer, but maybe I am looking at tents through rose tinted glasses. I have not camped since I went to V98.

Does anybody have any clothing made from hemp, and how do you clean it? Tessa Well done for getting a charity shop bargain! I agree with Lesley, they are just covering themselves. I have bought loads of second hand items which state 'Dry Clean Only' and only ever had one disaster, a beautiful dress made of Acetate, it shrunk really badly . I have even washed coats and jackets in the past too. does your machine have a wool cycle? If so, that will be fine for the jumper. We need a pic of your bargain too

If so, that will be fine for the jumper. We need a pic of your bargain too I don't think I would have the nerve to wash a wool coat or jacket. We do have a dry cleaning machine in our local laundrette, it's quite good if you've got quite a bit to clean. Pics hmmmmm still haven't managed to get to grips with Photobucket, will have to ask Egluntine if she will help me AGAIN And before anybody kindly directs me to fulsome instructions in the stickie, because I am on dial up I am not prepared to sit like a lemon for gawd knows how long while it s l o w l y uploads. Charlottechicken
I am on dial up Tessa, it'll take about 10 minutes to upload one pic Set it up and go off and bake a cake or something I bought a lovely Per Una wool jumper from the British Heart Foundation shop the other week, I paid top dollar too (well £3.99 ) I will have to post a pic as it is beautiful. I never worry about washing dry clean only items as most things I buy are second hand so there's no great monetary loss, it's just annoying if anything goes wrong. superjules
I always wash my woolies in the machine - I'm with Rhapsody - although I can bake a cake! but I've got enough to do without going down to the river and scrubbing clothes with a stone! That reminds me, I must ebay that mangle I never use! I once lived with a flatmate who handwashed all her underwear.

The Dogmother
Don't worry Rhapsody - we're not all domestic godesses on here I do NOT camp (I leave that to Christian ) well, not since run to the sun about 20 years ago in a camper van, I am also hopeless at knitting and the only handwashing I do goes in the delicates cycle on the machine. Definitely NOT girlie either Have to admit to the other vices though.
Rhapsody
Tessa I really hope you dont think I've hijacked your thread babe.. But now there's a topic about SEWING MACHINES!!!! The Dogmother
Don't worry Dear *fetches Rhapsody's jacket with the leather straps* You can be a girl and non-girlie too; I used to service my own car, and am never happier than when chainsawing logs and smeared in chicken poo. Must admit to using my sewing machine a lot though
