Painting my front room

Recommended Posts

As I am married to a builder / decorator / sparks / carpenter / kitchen fitter you would think I might have a lovely house in the latest style. Oh no. In fact some 4 years after our extension (which he built) was finished (and I use the term "finished" loosely) I am still living with bare plaster, no skirting boards and doors which have never seen a coat of paint in their lives. I have tried nagging, cajoling, encouraging and at times even begging and pleading but of course when you spend all day building and painting the last thing you want to do at weekends or in the evenings is paint and build. So I thought to hell with it and I gave the whole of downstairs a coat of magnolia. Not my favourite but everywhere was already magnolia and it was easier to just freshen it all up and cover up the crayon and finger marks. THEN I thought it all looked a bit boring. So I moved a load of mirrors (£2 for 6 off the small ads at work - Ikea square red ones, which coincidentally match the Ikea red Billy bookcase I bought for the princely sum of £29) - this was all to OH's complete horror as they are both very BRIGHT RED and he likes - well, he likes magnolia. So, moved the mirrors giving me a whole big blank wall. Like a big blank canvas. I casually mentioned to him the other day that I might be painting a design on the wall, then I sort of hinted I was going to do some funky flowers all across it. That got his attention! So watch this space cos I have now started painting, it's a copy as it's so long since I did anything creative that I'm having to start with plageurism.

Don't you just love rediscovering something you used to like and finding that you still do!

ooh, good for you! Can't wait to see the pics - and your OH can't complain, since he wasn't willing to do anything about it.

You know the saying - 'cobbler's children always go barefoot' - I'm not surprised that your house is always the last thing to get any work done on it, that's a familiar tale!

One of my closest friends husband is a tiler, and a very good one too ;)

She has the same problem with downstairs loo's, kitchen all needing finishing off, so she booked her husband for herself so he could get the work done. The pitfall of leaving the appointment's to the missus

May be an idea for the rest of you :D

The plumber's tap always leaks Mrs B!

How clever of you........I can't draw a wiggy line.

Am looking forward to the photos.

Well, here it is so far, still got more of the "cow parsley" type flowers to add in a paler pink and a big orange circle, but I just looked at the clock and I've got a school run in 5 hours!!

What d'you reckon? My OH is going to hate it but the kids will love it and so do I. Beats having a boring front room!

It certainly does Mrs.B. 8)

Keep at it........and post more photos.

I've always done painting/decorating/tiling - must finish the kitchen re-tiling...........I started it last June

(and our Accounts were the only ones not done in time this year - it was more cost effective to take a £100 fine and complete other peoples returns  )

Wow Mrs B, it looks gorgeous so far

The spots remind me of Abi's old room, now our dressing room. I randomly painted seven different sizes of circles in seven different colours all over the walls, it is soooo hard to make things look random and not start to use patterns.

I then painted the ceiling sky blue, added clouds and used glow paint to make constellations.

It was the best bit of decorating i've ever done, never again though

I can sympathise.

My Hubby is a window fitter/builder/plumber/spark/general jack of all trades, & it took 12 years for our extension to be totally completed

Mostly because any spare time he had, someone would phone & ask him to do a quick job or favour,& he is so lovely he can never say no :?

It looks lovely MrsB :P

That looks really nice... those flowers looks so fine and the colours are so fresh... :)

As to working at weekends, I clean, tidy, do laundry, cook and take care of everything for everyone just as much if not more on saturday and sunday than any other day... I understand someone wanting time off, but then time off is a distant dream to many mums...
