One of our ex-batts has died

Recommended Posts

went to collect our eggs yesterday and found two ex-batts on the nest, one happily laying the other standing hunched with her eyes a bit closed. We get a fair number of soft eggs from them so I kind of guessed maybe she was trying to lay another one. I reached in and gave her a stroke and she sort of made that purring / growling noise. Then I had to go to work so told mum to keep an eye out for the children so they didn't disturb her too much. Sadly at about 5pm last night I got a text from mum saying she had died.

BUT! She had nearly 7 months, 6 with us, of pecking, stretching, foraging, dustbathing, sunbathing (well, about 2 days of it but there you go!) and generally behaving like a chicken so I'm very glad about that. If they have to die then I'm glad it was with us being loved and cared for rather than in an A4 cage to end up on a compost heap.

Sooooo sorry Mrs B. for the loss. But what a lovely stroke & purring you were able to share. Bless her, how kind you provided her with love, freedom, kindness, blue skies, green grass & the warmth of the sun & breeze gently ruffling through her feathers.

The joys you enabled in her last 7 months must make you very proud.

Bless you & yours

Ms Tillysthinkingofyou.
