BeckyBoo
....and am in agony, and am feeling very sorry for myself. Started two days ago (terrified of dentists ) and I'm now having to pop pain killers every 4 hours. I broke a tooth 7 years ago but because it only hurt for a day I left it, then it broke a bit more a few years ago but still didn't hurt so I STILL left it, and now it's back to haunt me I've tried ringing my local dentist but they're fully booked til SEPTEMBER!! (worse than the doctors!) So am now waiting on a call back from the Dentists helpline who, apparently, will find me one to go and see. AND as well as having to be brave and go, I also have to be brave as I'll have to take 3 children with me and mustn't let them see me behaving like a wuss!!! As a sideline, why aren't teeth and eyes part of the NHS anymore? Fairly fundamental to health care I would have thought? Mrs B
Louise
Oooooh mrs B I am so with you I had the same thing about a year ago I broke a filling and because I had moved area and was terrified of the dentist I ignored and 7 years later it started to hurt I had to go and see a new dentist (I even contemplated travelling to Oxford to my old one ) I explained how scared I was and he was so good took all the time required to make me at ease and I am fine with him now The first appointment I was a complete wreck and cried the whole way thorugh and I didn't start to calm down until I had beeen for about 4 appointments You will get there I promise
ClaireG
Ouch. Toothache is the worst, poor you. I totally agree with you re teeth and eyes and the NHS. My 9 year old son has one of his adult teeth come through without the babytooth coming out. It's quite far back and he is going to need a brace but the Dentist doesn't know if she is allowed to do it on the NHS (new rules have come in) and has got to speak to the Primary Care Trust to find out. I find it shocking that i might have to pay for something that is affecting his whole mouth and he is under 16.
BeckyBoo
Well, wish me luck got my first dentists appointment for 25 years in under an hour! Mrs B
craftyhunnypie
They sell a DIY filling kit in Boots now! Clove oil will soothe the toothache & there is also a paste you can buy for relieving the pain. Emma.x
The Dogmother
Good luck Mrs B. Louise, I can't believe a strong girl like you being scared of the dentist
MedusA
Good luck Mrs. B. *fingers crossed* Sorry , but I am reminded of the poem. "Oh I wish I'd looked after my teeth". Was it by Pam Ayers?
Olly
Good luck ... things have moved on a lot, your fear may be connected with childhood experiences, but trust me, anaesthetics are much better and dentists are much more sympathetic. You're probably there by now - hope it's sorted out.
dancing cloud
Terrified of dentists too. On one occasion when I had to go as a filling had come out, I gripped the arms of the chair so hard and for so long my fingers seized and they had to help me open my hands Hope all went well, the pain's now gone and you treated yourself to something nice as a reward for being brave (and I bet your children never noticed a thing ). chili pepper
Best of luck!!! I went to the dentist last year for the first time in 26 years. The pain had got too bad and I had to go. I was very pleasantly surprised! I had a root canal filling with just a local anaesthetic and I only winced once (he did warn me that he was about to do a very sensitive bit). It was nothing like I remember it being as a child.
Tessa the Duchess
Another dental phobic here I finally gritted my teeth and went last year and although it took a couple of chats with the dentist to actually get me to sit in the dreaded chair, I was also pleasantly surprised at how things have improved since I last went, years ago However the cost of dentistry is really obscene, and has become a luxury item, which is very wrong Hope it went ok Mrs. B and that you are soon pain free. BeckyBoo
I'm back but I'm not pain free. Have anti-biotics so he can't take it out (which is what needs to happen) until they've taken effect. So still popping pain killers, BUT you are all right, it was VERY different to when I was last there. And yes, it was a very bad childhood experience, nasty dentist in the early 70's who didn't like children, Mum had a screaming row with them and then (this is where it went wrong) she never took me to one again. Anyway, I wasn't actually frightened at all after all that although when I go back next Friday to have the bloomin thing ripped out I might be. Still, I keep telling myself I've had three children, one with nothing but gas and air at the end, it can't be as bad as that? Mrs B
Tiggy
ooh Mrs B, I'm terrified too but had to go last year & have a crown fitted, first trip to a dentist in 10 years, but they are much better theses days, I'm still a wus tho
Helly Welly
I go to the dentist religiously but i am terrified. One of the symptoms of Hypermobility Syndrome is that lignocaine injections, the ones used by dentists, don't work properly on me. I had to have a filling redone last time and it really hurt, much more than it used to. Thankfully have strong teeth but i'm dreading going again. Egluntyne
Was going to wish you luck but see that you are back already. I hope the antibiotics do the trick and that your next appointment sorts things out for you.
Guest
if you tell them you're in pain/agony, they'll fit you in as an emergency! I had a lot of dental work done after I broke my arm because I figured the pain of the dentsit couldn't be nearly as bad as my arm! Actually, it wasn't too bad as it turned out, dentistry has come a long way, don't be scared.
deejmum
I had a wisdom tooth taken out in the dentists chair last year and I felt nothing! I could not believe he had done it without me realising. I have so much more faith in dentists now than I had when I was a child and teenager. Good luck, it will be fine
Olly
Having a tooth out is actually easier than having a filling, in my opinion - you won't feel it, and it won't hurt much afterwards. Glad to hear that it wasn't as bad as you thought.
Ain't Nobody Here
Hope you get it sorted soon. Glad you didn't find the dentist as bad as you expected! Can't believe there are so many of you who never go to the dentist . We all go every six months or so . I agree about the tooth removal - I had a wisdom tooth out a few years ago and it wasn't sore, just a really weird feeling .
jess
I think the amount that you pay is significantly reduced to what it could be. I don't know the dental system confuses me greatly...
Cate in NZ
I thought dentistry was expensive in the UK.......but believe me the cost over there is nothing in comparison to prices over here I'm glad you've got your ABs now MrsB, and I hope that it all goes well for you next week
Abbsie
I hate dentists, my dentist is a creepy old man!

chickencam
How's the toothache Mrs B? Any better this week?
BeckyBoo
It is better actually thanks for asking. Had a few days of real pain and discomfort, not helped when I discovered that I was allergic to the antibiotics they had given me it's so long since I had any prescribed medicine I had no idea I was allergic to pennicillin. Luckily (cos these things always happen at a weekend) the out of hours doctor faxed a prescription to my local Sainsburys pharmacy so I just had to run in and get it - very impressed! They must be kicking in as I haven't had any painkillers today yet - it does hurt but I hate taking medicine so much that I'd rather have a bit of pain than fill myself with drugs which make me feel generally yuk. Friday is D day though, out it comes Mrs B
