Own up - who's had the heating on DECEMBER UPDATE!

Recommended Posts

I've had the heating on...twice for an hour each time. Purely to get the washing dry due to all the horrid wet weather we've had. :(

We have a very, very cold room in our house that we need to look at how to insulate. It is above our drive/carport so is exposed from below, above and two sides. Perhaps extra insulation in the floor would help? We have no access to the roof space above as it is bricked up (i.e. no access from the loft) It is like an ice box in there :(

I have had the heating on at a low level (17 degrees) for a couple of weeks my house is very old and has lime mortar holding it up and unfortunately that is like a sponge so with all the rain recently the place was smelling damp and musty the only way to prevent that is to have the heating on low ALL the time

It does also help to get washing dry

Try Cellotex insulation Loon - it comes in slabs like polystyrene and is foil backed - great for roofs and floors.

I love my warm PJ, and will wear a thermal vest and socks with them in the winter. I don't care so long as I am warm. I usually also have my big fat lump of a cat to keep me warm, but he slept with Rosie last night.

Who needs men, eh?

If you turned the carport into an enclosed garage, you would notice a real difference Looney! Possibly a bit of an over-the-top method to heat a room!

We've discussed this idea but we would lose a lot of parking room as the house isn't as long as the drive - if you see what I mean. It would make it loads warmer though.

I think we'll probably end up doing this. My Dad has offered his services so it would be rude not to take him up on his offer!

OK we are now into October and the temp at night is in single figures (forecase says 4 here tomorrow night!). The heating is on at school. How are we all doing.

Well here the heating has still NOT been on. I've had a fire going most nights and fleecy jammies, dressing gown, thick socks etc. We have the calor heater on in Mum's or the halogen heater. I'm trying to persuade Mum that my kitchen is warmer than her dining room (conservatory) in the morning and we should move "bases"

We have a supplier of free wood now and our "paid" supplier is charging only £35 for a big bulders bag (you know the ton sand ones). Our watchman (when it works) says 2, the hot water is coming on for a bare minimum of 10 mins morning and night - which is enough for my bath - Mum's shower is electric.

I'm hoping ot hold out till January now, we are away for 2 weeks at Christmas (think of the money I'll save not needing to warm the house during the school holidays!). I think we will have at least one of Mums storage heaters on sooner though - her bedroom is parky, mind you so is mine but I'm hanging in there!

I am so cold that I am sitting with a hot water bottle, a fleece on and I am shivering, but haven't got round to turning on the heating yet. We are still at the time of year when the house overheats quickly and everyone starts opening windows. Seems such a waste, so I will suffer a bit longer.

No heating here either. :D:D

I have started wearing jumpers and yes, my slippers are on again. My house is 18.9 degrees so we're still OK, but one daughter is moaning that her hands are too cold. The other is still in a T-shirt.

I NEVER heat the bedrooms. I love my hot water bottles and I'm getting excited that I will soon need two!

I will attempt to keep the heating off until half term. I'll know when the time is right: when my nose is cold, my hands and feet are cold and I sit huddled drinking hot drinks and never quite managing to get around to doing anything and cooking or ironing just doesn't warm me up - then I'll know the heating needs to go on!:lol:

We cracked at the weekend - I say "we".... my husband is really nesh but I come from a family where ice on the inside of bedroom windows was the norm....

Hands up all the people who read this and went, "What does nesh mean?" As a born and bred northerner now down in the South, it is a word that I use and get met with blank expressions when I do! Thanks alih for reassuring me that it is a real word!

We finally gave in yesterday and put it on for a couple of hours in the evening, same again tonight. It's on very low though and I am wearing 2 jumpers, a scarf, socks and slippers.

I find it easier to keep warm during the day by keeping busy and moving around a lot but by evening I just want to slump. I am thinking of buying an electric blanket, it must be cheaper to warm the bed rather than the bedroom.

Hot water bottles Tessa!! Lots of them!! Oh, the pleasure! :D:D

Actually I'm guessing that an electric blanket may well be cheaper than several kettle boilings. :?

We have had ours on twice over the weekend. I also find that during the day if im in i can keep warm by keeping busy.

However when it comes to the evening i get really cold. I have normal socks, warm fluffy socks and fluffy slippers and my feet are still freezing. In bed i have a normal long sleeved pj top and a fleecy pj top, warm pj bottoms, my fluffy socks and wierd slipper things, a hot water bottle, a blanket and my dressing gown on top of my duvet. I warm up with all this on-but an electric blanket does sound tempting, anyone got one?

Its great in our kitchen as we have an aga(not very environmentally friendly though) but it makes you realise when you go into a different room how warm the kitchen was and how chilly the rest of the rooms are.

Our storage heaters went on last night. It is freezing here :( Torrential rain and very windy this afternoon. A large shed blew over and we have lost the roofing felt from the workshop roof. It was raining so hard the rain was coming down the chimney and putting out the fire I had just lit

I do have a hot water bottle, but it seems to go cold really quickly and only heats up a bit of me. I reckon an electric blanket put on half an hour before I got to bed should heat the whole bed and all of me. Can anyone recommend an electric blanket? I don't want one that you can leave on all night.

Sunshine, I suffer with cold feet and have got some proper sheepskin slippers (everyone is probably fed up of hearing about them on here:oops: ) You don't wear socks with them and my feet are really, really warm. I got sheepskin boots last year and my feet were lovely and warm even in temps down to -5 and in 10 inches of snow, again wearing no socks. My Dad has an electric blanket and finds it excellent.

Tessa, I have invested in some nice hot water bottle covers (M+S or Boots). That way you can fill them with boiling water and not get cold. I have one bottle for my feet and another to cuddle  Sometimes they are still warm in the morning!!
