The new bantam babes

Recommended Posts

With the loss of a couple of our oldsters this year, I have decided to re-stock and use the opportunity to bring in some more blue egg layers as the people who buy my eggs always like the 'fairy eggs'

After a drive up to Stafford to meet a lovely breeder, I can present the following:

(we have used a couple of the old and much loved names)

Bunty, 18 week old white araucana bantam:

Jude an Ancona bantam (white eggs) and Dizzy (named by Rosie) a lavender araucana

Sadie, a maran bantam with jude in the background:

Little Bunty again (can you tell that I have a soft spot for her?)

The bigger girls are all 22 weeks old and about to start laying :D

I will pass the details of the breeder on to Barbara as I was very impressed with him and he has some lovely birds.

 Yeah, well - I originally wanted 2 araucanas, then heard that he had Anconas, which being Italian birds like me, I just had to have. When we got there, the birds were all beautiful and in such good condition and he kept waving this Maran at me  I've always wanted a dark brown egg layer... and I've blamed it on stock rotation; bringing in a new stock of layers now that some of the others are getting on a bit.

A good friend came with me and wanted another araucana. She was on the phone to her OH, but he flatly refused to let her have another chook

Clare they look brilliant ans so at home already! :D

Bunty really suits her name :D

She is a little poppet, and I nearly called her Sweet Pea, but Bunty seemed to suit her more.

The hooligans were heckling through the run this mornign when I let them out (I fed corn along the run edge), but by the time I went off to work, the hoolies had got fed up with the idea and were off terrorising wood lice in the log pile

Your new girls are lovely Clare, I hope you get lots of fairy eggs..... :)

Thanks Nicola; I am looking forward to a lovely mixed palette of egg colours. The lavender araucana, who Rosie has named Dizzy certainly looks ready to lay soon - the others are the same age, but don't look so mature. I will be surprised if Bunty lays this side of Christmas.

They have all been handled regularly and are biddable, except for the Maran who keeps giving me an evil look and pecking at my ring and watch strap. She'll soon toe the line, mark my words.

They seem very well behaved and are in fantastic condition too. I will get them out of the rablu this evening and dose the for lice and worms... they don't have any, but I always do that with any incoming stock while they are still in isolation. i will also clip the Ancona's wings as they have a reputation for being flighty.

All being well, they will be free-rangin with the others in a few days.
