madchickenlady
Hi all I'm looking for some kind of egg holder thingy for my pekin eggs (which will hopefully start to arrive within the next few weeks! ) I want something attractive, but not hugely expensive. What do you use? Do you write dates on your eggs?
Sandychick
I write the date and chickens name on each egg with a pencil. My eggs are kept in a kitchen egg bucket. Looks nice but it is a pain searching about to use them in date order. I'll be putting an 'egg skelter' on my christams list - they look fab
Ain't Nobody Here
You'll be needing one of these Freddie, a forum member, makes & sells them (Google egg-skelter) I put the date on my eggs and record them in a spreadsheet .
Janty
I keep my eggs in a nice price kensington hen which I bought off ebay. I was never into the ceramic hens but this one is black and white and looks quite nice.

beach chick
I LOVe the eggskelter, but cant really justify it as I have 2 wooden painted ones- one in duck egg blue which matches the units, and one in dark red, which matches the floor.... so I just move 'em on up every day! Seagazer
I use the eggskelter - its brilliant. I also write the date and how much they weigh on the egg. My OH is taking 3 boxes to work tomorrow - hope they don't all think I'm sad I knew I shouldn't have put the weight on.....
hennymom
we keep our eggs in a wicker basket filed with straw and odd lost hen feathers..everyone comments on lovely and natural they eggs look piled up in a basket... it keeps them cool without refridgeration and without heat.... and I date them with a pencil too.. iar fach goch
my lovely new black eggskelter - genius!
jlo
I did start by keeping them in the fridge but found that my poached eggs started to spread even when the egg was not that old. We only have two hens and OH scoffs most of the eggs so we don't have that many hanging around. I bought one of these http://www.lakeland.co.uk/ceramic-egg-tray/F/keyword/egg/product/12281 from Lakeland and it suits us fine. We know which way round we put them - I admire fellow omleteers who mark their eggs with the date etc but that is not something that I can be bothered to do - we just eat them! Have to say I love the look of the egg skelter though - wish I had known about that!
RubyReckless
I have a terracotta egg tray much like the Lakeland one. I write the date on in pencil so I know which are the lovely fresh ones for poaching, the older ones for boiling and the oldest for baking in cakes. Mutrix Farmers
Egg skelter for me, but my girls only lay brown eggs so it doesn't look as pretty as ANH's. Freddy does different colour ones now!!! OH says I don't need another one, but I'm working on him!!

..lay a little egg for me
Egg skelter here too...but some eggs have to be helped to roll down as Becky the Specky lays very small round eggs that want to turn sideways in the skelter and then get stuck. But it is great to have them in date order.
cordelia
goodness i wish my girls would hurry up and lay I think they are too young still) my lovely cream egg skelter is graced with the lovely free range eggs, that a boy on a local farm has started selling... darn remembered I have loads of washing up to do, and the dishwasher to empty too....double drat
Purplemaniacs
Egg skelter here too...but some eggs have to be helped to roll down as Becky the Specky lays very small round eggs that want to turn sideways in the skelter and then get stuck. I used to have this problem but now Ebony's eggs get stuck as they are too big and get jammed half way down where there is a support for the top layer, but I'm not complaining, I love the egg skelter and Ebony's eggs are lovely almost all over 70g. beach chick
ooh, I think I might have to google eggskelter, it does look funky. and I am running out of room due to my clever girls. If I had a proper job, I could take them to work... but working from home kind of limits that!
moomin
I keep my eggs in an Omlet egg-box I only get 2 a day Doesn't seem worth shelling out for an Eggskelter although I'd love one. Perhaps I need more chooks
Alex_A
I have a terracotta egg tray much like the Lakeland one. I write the date on in pencil so I know which are the lovely fresh ones for poaching, the older ones for boiling and the oldest for baking in cakes. Is there a list somewhere of what age of eggs is best for what use? I'm particularly interested in which to scramble or fry. Thanks!
