Sainsburys vs. Tesco?

Recommended Posts

As there are awwwful problems with roadworks outside Tescos at the mo  I have taken to popping into Sainsburys on the way home. Now, the question is...there doesnt seem to be much difference in their prices but hubby had a small piece of steak and said it was the best tasting for a long while...so do I keep shopping there and is it overall more expensive or not? Credit crunch is always on our minds at the mo isnt it so I would appreciate your views on it. I know that tescos isnt flavour of the month with you guys but I cant really afford to double the shopping bill!

I shopped with Tescos for years before sainsburys. I've always done online grocery shopping, got so fed up with Tesco sending out of date food, damaged boxes etc. I switched to Sainsburys in 2006 and much prefer them. I agree I dont see much difference in my overall shopping bill but with Sainsburys I feel their quality of food is much better, they seem to offer a greater range of "outdoor reared" meat (pork/sausages etc) and Im not throwing out of date food away like I was with Tesco, so im probably saving money. :)

I like their Taste the Difference products aswell....well labelled.

Edited to add - Sainsburys customer service - found them excellent - any order quibbles dealt with politely and efficiently.

I buy my shopping locally where possible but do use supermarkets where necessary, I use Sainsburys, M&S or Waitrose. I am not rolling in money or anything I just buy less good quality items, eat everything and don't waste anything so don't spend more overall than I would if I was tempted into a larger store!

If you eat every bit of a good quality dish then its not a waste of money :D

I don't mind Tesco but do try to avoid them as they seem to be taking over the world!

I did try Morrisons recently when I took my mum shopping and have to say that I was really impressed by their fruit & veg and also their meat and fish - they are the best lower budget supermarket I have ever been in.

I shop in Sainsburys - mainly cos its the only big supermarket in the nearby town. I also occasionally use Ocado online.

I can't really compare the two (Sainsburys and Tescos) - i suspect sainsburys is possibly slightly better quality but also slightly more expensive. In general Sainsburys have a much better record of animal welfare but they are by no means perfect and compared to the likes of M&S and Waitrose still fall short. Possibly if you're shopping for extras ie clothes, electronics tescos are better but then i am only speaking from having gone into smallish sainsburys and big tescos in the past!

The Sainsburys in Romford, Essex is HUGE! I felt a right country bumpkin gawking in awe of it when i went there with my Gran!:oops:

I agree that Morrisons are the best cheaper supermarket by far. We've got quite a big one not too far from us and the quality is generally very good although they are much more limited and stock far less "exotics" (apart from the whole corner devoted to Polish items - I went looking for Pledge but it's actually to cater for our East European colleeagues!)

I think that Tescos are cheaper than Sainsburys and to be honest I haven't personally found much difference between them in quality. Its only because we're so much nearer to Sainsburys that I shop there. I've also given up shopping on line as I was wasting so much food. It was so easy to just keep clicking "yes" to the same old items then storing them in the cupboard for weeks on end. I find if I shop weekly I plan more, waste less and budget far better. :)

you have to do what works for you, i waste less by shopping onlne(ocado) as i shop for meals rather than goodies i pick up as i walk round the supermarket. We are lucky here we have a huge tescos and asda, another smaller tesco, 2 sainsburys and a waitrose. But i still shop online as i work long days up to 13hrs and never feel like trudging round the shops in the evening.I don't find sainsbury particularly dearer again its what you choose to spend your money on, smaller cuts of good meat padded out with more veg works for us!

I haven't been into a Tescos for years, but from their telly ads. I would say they are cheaper than Sainsburys. I shop online at Sainsburys I find them reasonable, although I buy meat and veg/fruit from my local shops. I have never been in a Morrisons, if I were richer I would buy all my groceries in M & S and Waitrose.

I switched to Sainsbury because it stocks bio-degradable waste bags, more fair trade products and more organic products. Sainsbury has also been slightly kinder towards free-range chicken and eggs! I get the feeling Sainsbury is more ethically sound, although I am not completely taken in! I don't think there is much difference in price, although it probably depends what you buy.

I think you end up going to the shop that keeps more of the things you use and which you can find your way around easily. I do usually go to Waitrose but I don't tend to buy my fruit, veg and meat there as we have a really great farm shop very close; I get my staples such as pasta, flour, tinned tomatoes, coffee etc from Suma (the wholefood cooperative, with whom I and some of my friends have an account), so I am generally going to Waitrose for the more unusual items, which they tend to stock. When I have been to Tesco, Morrisons etc, I have struggled to find the things I wanted because I was not familiar with the layout of the shop or their different products. I did notice that Morrisons seems to have a lot of unnecessary packaging which annoyed me, as did, surprisingly, M&S!

I think that Asda is the cheapest supermarket locally - their every day prices are cheaper BUT Morrisons are great for the loss leaders i.e. the stuff on the end of the aisles....I try to go in with tunnel vision and stock up on the offers and you can save a lot that way, but they seem to be more expensive on every day stuff such as cat food, detergents or whatever.

I used to shop more at Sainsburys, but I do think they're more expensive. I don't go to Tesco much, I went last week because I wanted wholemeal bread flour and thought they might have a better selection.

I love Aldi though, think their stuff is great and the prices are good too!

Many thanks for your replies. I think I will give it a go although itll take longer as Im not sure where everything is and its very big! Hopefully it will work out about the same pricewise...Im a sucker for a special offer!!!

Look out for those special offers though...sometimes they are not as good an offer as you think. For example, BOGOF deals on prepacked veg/fruit are usually still more expensive than buying loose veg/fruit. Special offers on small pack sizes are sometimes more expensive than buying the bigger pack anyway. I'm always butting in on little old ladies' shopping efforts by pointing out as they put the BOGOF veg in their trolley that it is more expensive than the loose veg...I think they appreciate it  !
