The Dogmother
Righty ho, I need some suggestions for a new vacuum cleaner as I am getting through them at the rate of knots (two last year). I am looking for a cylinder, bagless, non-upright cleaner which has decent 'suck' (say 2000W) and can cope with pet hair. I also want to spend under £100 and it mustn't be too heavy as I have 2 flights of stairs to get it up and down. I've done a bit of searching on t'interweb, but there's nothing like a personal recommendation is there? I have mostly hard floors (the original Victorian floor boards) and quite a few dust bunnies due to two cats and a lurcher. I don't think it's much to ask, but both my last ones lost suction despite frequent emptying and cleaning

Cinnamon
Get a Sebo Clare, they are brilliant. They are the only ones that you can replace all the filters in & John Lewis recommend them, which is good enough for me! They are very, very sucky , & get rid of all of Millies short spikey white hairs with no problem. They are especially designed for pet hair actually. They have them on the JL site, & I can honestly say that I would never go back to another brand (Except for Roomba of course).
ClaireG
We've got a Miele cat and dog. We were like you Clare, getting through them at a rate of knots. I wanted a bagless, which the Miele isnt, but when the last of my previous vacuums broke ( a dyson) i borrowed Mum and Dads miele and couldn't believe how fantastic it was! So went out and bought one that was about four years ago and it's still going strong. It is nearer the £200 mark though.
The Dogmother
Thanks Sarah, I'll have a look at that. I tried a friends Dyson and it weighed a ton.. I'm no wimp, but carting it up and down 2 sets of narrow, steep stairs wouldn't be fun. I currently have some on my list to look at at the weekend; Dirt Devil DCC003, Samsung SC84EO, Russell Hobbs 14165, Vax VEC-21. Has anyone experience of these? Cinnamon
http://www.johnlewis.com/230167218/Product.aspx This is my one. Not cheap, but its wonderful & with JL you get the extended guarantee too. Its light enough for my girls to handle
abwsco
I know Miele isn't on your list but mine is around 15 years old and still sucks like new. It will suck up my kitchen lino if I have it at full power. The only thing I've ever had to do to it is change the filters and bags.
The Dogmother
That one looks quite good Sarah, plus having a JL account will mean that I don't need to pay for it this month, which is a tad tight. I can see that I might have to be flexible on the spend to get a good one.
Blackrocksrock
I also have a dyson animal upright but we have a cylinder one in the vet surg and its not heavy and has replaceable filters etc too and gets loads of hard work here with all the hairs every day in life. The Dogmother
The one I used to have had washable filters and just a cylinder to empty. Dust really makes me sneeze a lot so I'm trying to avoid a bagged one if possible. This is all very interesting so keep the reviews coming..... hillfamily
I'm a Sebo girl aswell Clare They are pricey but they just never seem to go wrong :D I decided after years of going through cheap hoovers that didn't cope with 3 cats, a house bunny and children, to invest in something a bit more pricey but reliable and guaranteed to get the job done :D

We ended up with my parents cast off meile cat & dog because they wanted a spanking new one. It's still loads better than our old dyson! I wanted another bag-less one too but am very happy with the miele now!! Will definitely replace it with another one when it dies!!

It will suck up my kitchen lino if I have it at full power. The only thing I've ever had to do to it is change the filters and bags. Ditto! I inherited mine from my Mum, who must have had it at least 10 years before I took it over in 2003.

Minnie&Moose
Miele every time for us - we bought ours second hand more than 10 years ago and it's still going strong. Copes brilliantly with cat hair (we have loads of that), dried mud (we have loads of that too), and does a great job of removing cat litter that gets stuck between the planks in our tatty victorian floorboards! It is a bit heavy but it's well balanced for carrying, so we move it up and down between floors just fine.

Dust really makes me sneeze a lot so I'm trying to avoid a bagged one if possible. This is all very interesting so keep the reviews coming..... When you need to empty a Miele bag they have little handles that you pull. This then also closes the hole in the bag, so no dust escapes. Hope you know what I mean. I personally don't understand why anyone would choose a bagless vac as surely dust escapes when you empty it Although I still want a roomba -lols
The Dogmother
Those are all good reviews. I had a quick look while at work this afternoon and Miele is certainly on my list.
bluekarin
I too am a Miele girl. I had a useless Hoover which kept falling on me so I said "Right! I've had enough!" and bought a new one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Miele-Comfort-S4211-Vacuum-Cleaner/dp/B001505WGG. It was recommended on Which? and its the yellow one so not the cat and dog. We have two cats which shed lots of hair everywhere and it seems to clear it up enough. Its really light and I can use it throughout the house without having to use a brush for the hard floors which I did with my last one. miffy
I am a Miele Cat & Dog convert, I had 2 dysons which I finally lost patience with, hoses splitting and dust going everywhere when you empty it I LOVE my miele it copes with everything, slight moan about the price of the bags in local Currys?? but found them at half that price on line. Miele is worth every penny...when we moved into a rented house I filled the bag by hovering the house ONCE

I have had to bite the bullet and coem to the realisation that my unhappy history with vacuums is due partly to my reluctance to spend any money on them Miele is currently top of my list. gracefruit
We have a Miele Cat and Dog, too, and it's great. It's nearly 4 years old and works like new. We buy our bags fromhttp://www.vacuumbags2u.co.uk/.

In all my vacuum experience, this is the BEST I have used/had
Chookiehen
We used to have a Meile, and is was fantastic on the natural floors. However, when we fitted carpets in the bedrooms, we found it struggled eventually with the pooch hair. Was fab on the wood floors though. Becka
Just to be difficult, I have three miele machines in my house at the moment and am in the process of looking for another machine. They are all in different stages of disrepair and I am looking at a sebo machine to replace the one that's on it's last legs. We have two german shepherds and a cat and I have found that they're just not picking up the animal hair like they used to. I had an upright dyson animal that was fantastic at lifting the hair but the build quality was awful and it was very heavy. Buying a vacuum isn't as straight forward as it used to be!
