Sheilaz
Joo Joo, I'm so sorry to hear the news, you must be feeling devastated. Tons of love and sympathy from here. Maybe just holding Dad's hand & telling him how much you love him will be a comfort to him, and in the future you'll be glad to have had the chance. My heart goes out to you in this sadness, you're not alone, we really care. xx

Egluntyne
Very sorry to hear your news. It brought back a lot of memories about my Dad's last illness. You will find the strength from somewhere to get through it. It sounds as if he is being looked after by a caring team. Love to you and your family. chickweed
I am writing this with tears in my eyes. I lost my Dad last year, and one week later my Mum passed away. The death of my mum was not a total shock (she was in the later stages of Alzheimer's disease), But like you, I had only days to absorb the news that my dad would not survive. He too was like your Dad in his final days, which was very upsetting. Tell him you love him. I know what you are going through, I am really sad for you. chooklady
I'm so sorry for you, I know the pain your feeling, it hurts so much, you cannot explain it. My aunt, who was like a second mum to me, we're only a small family, died Christmas 2007, she had lots of things wrong but the end was quite sudden and very stressful. My thoughts are with you. Bantambabe
So sorry Joojoo. Lost my dad very quickly 6 years ago and know how hard it is. I agree with what others have posted though - the nursing staff ought to be able to give him something to calm him. The only downside is that it will probably sedate him. My dad was very agitated and "scared" (his word) and they said it was very common and gave him something to settle him. He was peaceful then, but didn't wake again and we lost him 2 days later. Will be praying for you Debs
Joojoo
Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts and PMs. You've all been through some terribly sad times too with your families so I know I'm not alone. I've just got back from visiting Dad and he seemed a lot more "with it" this afternoon and tonight than he was this morning. It's just absolutely heartbreaking to see him so upset when you can't do anything about it. He couldn't remember seeing the consultant at all this morning and the doctor telling him what was wrong so I've told him tonight that it's diverticulitis and that he needs antibiotics to treat it. He asked if an operation was necessary so I've told him that they are going to treat it with the antibiotics first. He thinks that once the antibiotics start working that everything will be ok but obviously we know different and it's so hard to stay positive and put a smile on your face when it's tearing you up inside. As much as I love him and don't want to lose him, I just hope that he doesn't have to go through this for too long. I've asked the hospital to ring me in the night if he is agitated again as maybe I could calm him down over the phone or failing that I can go to him as I'm only 15 mins away. I can't stand feeling so helpless. If by my being there at 3am in the morning is comforting or reassuring to him then I'll do it for as long as it takes. xx
