riane
Yesterday I had a call at work to collect ED from school as she was not very well. When I got home it was to a scene of utter devastation. The bin was down the field, the garden furniture was all over, pots scattered. Then I noticed the little chicken house where we have been keeping our chicks(now 12 weeks). It was on its roof down the other end of the run. I quickly told ED to go inside and then ran into the run. The chicks were huddled together in a corner of the run looking quite scared. Then I noticed one of them sitting on the grass. I picked her up and tried to assess any injuries. there was no blood or anything looking out of place. She wouldn't stand up so I wrapped her in towels and tucked her up warm. I put her in the dark bedroom and decided it could be shock. Then I went and checked the others who responded well to their home being put back and fresh food and water. I kept checking her and she seemed to perk up so by teatime we got her out of the basket but she still would not stand on her legs. So, I took her to the vets and she diagnosed a broken back with paralysis of the legs. We decided to put her to sleep rather than let her die through the night. When I got back my neighbour came out to say had I seen his garage frame. (he is in the process of building a garage.) The steel frame was completed twisted and crumpled. I don't know what happened here yesterday morning but it was more than a "bit of a windy day"!!! I have now put bricks in the hen house. The chick that died was probably the only girl out of the five and the one therefore we were going to keep. Trust the boys to all get out of the way! The strange thing is that if it wasn't for ED being ill I wouldnt have been able to help the chick in the afternoon as I wouldn't have got home till 6pm! What a day!

Egluntyne
Sorry to here it Maria. Funny how fate stepped in isn't it. It was certainly hellishly windy in these parts for the previous 2 or 3 days.
Ain't Nobody Here
What a horrible shock for you . So sorry about the little chick but thank goodness the others were OK. First of all I thought it had been vandals - I suppose it's better that it was "natural causes" .

chickencam
It must have been a mini tornado, we had just the right conditions for one on Friday. We had a heavy hail storm and very strong winds for about 15 minutes at about 10am on Friday morning. Hope that your daughter is feeling better and RIP little chick at least you managed to shorten her suffering.
