Electricbarbarella
My friend has had 10 girls stolen from her allotment. Why the heck would anyone steal 10 chickens, they are not worth much, they are warrens. she has only had them a couple of months and will probably not dare replace them as the theif obviously know where to look. I cant believe anyone would do that. I have been waking up at every little tiny noise outsuide getting paranoid about my girls now. I am so

Chook n Boo Mum
I've just had to say what my initial thoughts were so they don't go the wrong way & come out of my fingers & onto the forum.....why do people do this, it makes me so cross I hope the chooks are being looked after properly, the alternative is unbearable. Huge hugs to your friend, Sha x
Electricbarbarella
thats th worst bit isnt it, it will have been teenagers I think and goodness knows what they have done with the girls. I am so angry, friend told dh, didnt tell me, and hasnt yet as I thinkl she knows how upset I would be. She hadnt let her children name them yet as she was worried something bad was going to happen. katieadams
Oh no that's terrible, such a cruel thing to do on so many levels. I considered an allotment for our girls to live on but this sort of thing makes me glad they're close in our back garden. Really shouldn't need to be a consideration
Ain't Nobody Here
That's terrible, your poor friend . My first thought was a recent post about six formers releasing chickens at school as a "prank" . Can she keep chickens at her house instead?
Valkyrie
Sad to hear. Unfortunately allotments are often open to thefts - mainly by breaking into sheds and in some cases walking off with produce. I know I wouldn't leave my girls or any other hens on the allotment because of the safety factor (no longer have an allotment anyway). Bad enough worrying about people getting in the gardens where some have had birds taken or eggs. I would so like to see these people caught. Is there a security camera on the premises? That should be installed on all allotments anyway as a deterrent - it is all too easy pickings for some low lives. Ooh, now you've got me ranting. I'll step down from the box PDQ! tidygirlsuk
How awful. It makes me so if only people realised how much these chickens mean to us, then maybe they would think twice.
Guest
oh bet someone localy knows something..perhaps some posters with a reward as to info...would be good if someone could spill the beans as we know nationally at the moment money talks... At least then you know you have done all that is possible. There has been a lot of sheep theft lately too and horses have always been stolen so picking a few chickens is no different. What a shame , hope she spreads the word locally someone must know something. Be good if she could keep them at home as someone else suggested. Poor lady
Barkisland
What a rotten trick.. I hope the girls are being looked after by someone. I cannot bear the thought of cruelty.
Lewis
Has she reported it to the police? Telling the local paper could also help, maybe someone will see their neighbour has just aquired 10 chickens.
Egluntyne
Blimey E, is this in Sheffield? I remember reading in the Star a while back that this sort of thing was going on in the Grenoside/Outibridge area on allotments. Sorry to hear it. splodge88
Something similar happened in Swindon. But on a bit of a bigger scale. Because of the 'financial times' chickens are being stolen as egg-layers. People who steal them often keep them to sell the eggs. I prefer to think they were stole for this rather than...anything else.
Electricbarbarella
It is inn Sheffield, just up the road, friends hubby has assured her that they will have been nicked for eggs, and he is taking steps to secure allotment so they can get some more, cant quite believe it, he has spent all winter building them a house and run and chatting to me constantly about it as I think I may be the only person who would be so enthusiastic. The walk in rin is going to be doube padlocked and hubby is planting pyracantha all down the side of the house for me. It's a rotten thing to happen. Best wishes to your friend. Electricbarbarella
I was thinking this, my mum reckons ours are OK as you cant see round the back of the house, so unless you actually know you would never guess that they are there. still really worrying thgough.
