I've cuddled an alpaca!!

Recommended Posts

Sorry to make you all jealous but I went to visit Hen, Karina and their new boys today.

I have completely fallen in love :D , they are so gentle and sweet. They make really soft sounds and have the softest fleece. The 11 chickens they are guarding so far are really cute too. The sun was shining, and it was a perfect day :D

Aren't they sweet? I also love the tramline haircuts. :D

They have faces like camels.

Do they bite, hiss or kick out at all? I really really like them.

What do they require as regards to feeding , looking after? Do they have to have their teeth filed & hooves cut or am I talking utter rubbish?

They never spat, bit or kicked while we were there. They only let the side down when one of them lifted up his leg and farted :lol::lol::lol::lol: , typical bloke.

They moved really slowly and gracefully, it didn't even alarm us when it was teatime and they all came lolloping at us as we were between them and their tea, as they do everything so gently, they just skirted round us :D .

Hen, feeds them some special supplement with minerals in that they would get in Peru but don't get from the plants over here.

I don't know about the rest.

I'll tell her to get onto this thread and answer some questions :D .

Thanks guys for all your lovely comments. For those of you near enough to come and visit, I'm going to put a new thread on soon about sorting out a date.

They are very gentle animals and their most usual response is to run away. They do spit at each other, but very rarely at humans. (they spit less than llamas and camels). My lads are 2 and 3 years old and their previous owners said they have NEVER known them to spit at a person.

In the same way, they have kicked out at each other, buts its very ineffective looking, more like one of us slapping anothers hand away. They have toenails like camels, not hooves, or claws, so they cant do much damage with them!

They dont hiss  . They make a soft humming sound that sounds like the noise it makes when you are a kid and put a piece of paper over a comb and blow onto it. LIke a half sheep, half humm sound.

The males grow fight teeth at 3 years old. They only have two of these. They are hooked teeth and about the only thing an alpaca has that can do damage. When they get sheared the shearer will check the teeth and file these down.

As far as feed goes, they eat a hard feed called "camelibra". As Mostin says, its basically just vitamines and minerals that they dont get naturally in this country. A big sack of this cost me £22 but its going to last an eternity. They have a tiny tiny amount each day. (Apart from Linden who has developed a passion for layers pellets  . Their main diet is just grass (with hay supplimented in winter if you havent enough grass).

They need to have their toenails cut about 3 monthly, which is very easy to do yourself (she says not having done it yet! Ive been shown how to do it though!)

Thats about it I think, oh and I think its 6monthly jabs to protect them from getting beasties and illnesses.

I cant tell you how wonderful they are. They are like magical, mystical creatures of calm! I could just watch them for ever! :D:D:D:D

So, Mostin, how many have you ordered and forgotten about?

Your garden has room for LOADS of alpacas.

Do not tempt me you wicked woman :shameonu::shameonu::lol: .

I would never get anything done. Even Shaun just sat silently and watched them in amazment  . They are almost hypnotic :D , I would have to quit work so I could just chicken and alpaca watch all day.
