Fly-tipping

Recommended Posts

Grrr!

We just got a call from the farm adjacent to the woods to say a very large amount of rubbish has been fly-tipped in the entrance to the woods, so we can't get a vehicle in or out. This is the second time it's happened in a couple of months. Both were on a Friday.

Last time we could shift it with the tractor but this time it is much too much as the tractor bucket isn't that good at picking up solid rubble - it's more for feed and bedding and stuff.

What a pain!

We've reported it to the police, council and Environment Agency. I'm awaiting a chap from the Environment Agency to ring me and then I'll go up there and hopefully they will arrange for it to be removed.

As always it is a problem to get anybody to come out, partly because we live across the county boundary from the woods, and partly because it doesn't have a residence in the woods, so it doesn't have a postcode and hence doesn't exist on their systems.

It will be interesting to see whether they are actually helpful.

Thats terrible, it really annoys me when people cant abide by simple rules and have to inconvenience other people (not to mention the cost of clearing that up now)

If they had phoned me I would have taken that lot and kept it out of landfill

I am turning in to Steptoe

Possibly a new breed of attack chickens ;)

I think a sign saying "Beware of the chickens" should scare them!

After many phone calls, we decided not to put up with being told that we have to pay for its removal ourselves (which would cost a fortune because it is on a national speed limit road and you need specialist contractors to do it, you can't just get a skip and do it yourself). The Council are sending contractors on Tuesday to do it.

Still means we can't get a vehicle in there over the weekend, but we probably don't need to - I can get there on my bicycle easily enough, just can't carry much with me.

I wonder if there was anything in the rubbish which would point to the perpetrator? It is shocking people feel it is okay to do things like this. I know if it was me doing something like that (which I wouldn't, but just if) then someone, probably a policeman would be along and catch me in the act. I do hope you find out who did it so the council can fine them.

With the difficulties the councils make for people to take stuff to the tip these days, I'm not surprised fly tipping is getting more common. I don't understand the councils' thinking...it seems obvious to anyone with half a brain that making people pay to take stuff to the tip and requiring them to have licences etc will just lead to fly tipping.

You should definitely not have to pay to get it removed.

Re prevention: How about a big sign saying something like "About to dump your rubbish here? You are being filmed and it will be given to the police" Might work? Set up some (real or fake) CCTV cameras pointing to the gate.

We have a small battery-powered wildlife camera that I have used on the entrance before, but I'd rather have it taking photos of wildlife as that is what the site is for. I guess we'll have to put it back up on the entrance and see what suspicious vehicles arrive over the next few days.

It is a real pain, but at least the Council are going to remove it.

That is awful  I can never understand the point in driving around to find somewhere to dump it. Why not drive to the tip? If they are not builders they can dump it legally and I am sure plenty of small builders get away with dumping it a the tip anyway, there are always plenty there when I go. Our local builder got a 10,000 fine for fly tipping a few years ago. Someone reported him as they saw him doing it. His name is 'Tippetts' which made me laugh :lol:

How annoying makes me mad too....

oh hate to say it but around here the same farm field entrances tend to get used repeatedly for dumping all things...mattresses/cars etc.

Perhaps a reward for info ...someone must have had some work done somewhere. Would have alook through for any information. CCTV etc.

Years ago I found a load of dumped rubbish(sofa/clothes etc) and found info with a name and address, the police did act on it. Those bricks look ok ?? recyle?

good luck indie

Docsquid, I work for the Environment Agency too, so let me know if you need any help getting through. Is it on your (private) land or public land? - it is hard to tell from the photos. Technically unless it is what we call the 'big, bad and ugly' ie several lorry loads, or something hazardous like chemicals then it is the responsibility of the local council to remove and to investigate if it keeps happening.

Hope it gets sorted.

Thank you! We did contact both the Environment Agency and the Council as the EA do want to know about repeat offences and such like. It is partly on private land and partly on the highway - the boundary is actually four feet from the edge of the road and the first part of our entrance is county highway. When we made the new entrance last year we had to set it back so a car or tractor can pull right off the road while the gate is being opened for safety reasons as it is a national speed limit road (i.e. a racetrack).

I suppose technically the Council should only clear up the first four feet of the rubbish, but they are going to take it all. The EA chap is going to come round first to have a look and see if he can tie it in with other events in the same area (there were several more or less on the same night but each in a different location).

It is a real pain as we have some friends coming up from Bristol who have never seen it before and they aren't going to be able to see it at its best :(
