ali-s
About two inches first thing this morning. Turned to rain this afternoon which washed the snow away. It is bitterly cold and blowing a gale now.

Old Speckled Hen
No more snow here though it was forecast for today. Instead it's been suuny and very spring-like. I remember, as a child, watching the news during winter with shots of farmers digging lambs out of snow-drifted fields and helicopters dropping hay. It was a regular thing. Have the winters got milder or has animal husbandry changed I seem to recall that Kent always got it badly as well as the counties in the north. The Dogmother
I think they have changed OSH - this winter wasn't that hard, just a return to 'proper winters' as we remember them. We've just become unused to dealing with them, too reliant on technology and out of touch with nature.
Valkyrie
You are right there. Kent and Norfolk always used to get a basinful. Where we were was a bit more sheltered I suppose, we occasionally had snow, and when we did it was quite deep but usually later and it wasn't around for long. When mum's friend moved to Norfolk the previous owners told her to stock up well in the freezer and to make sure she had enough fuel for the winter as they could get snowed up for quite some time. Since she moved in there wasn't any snow of significance until recently! She must have been up there for around 25 years now - if not, more! Edited to add she made sure she cooked a lot of meals and she has 2 big freezers.
Mrs Webmuppet
I lived in the countryside in Kent, in my youth and we got snowed in regularly. We had 6 foot snowdrifts. The lane adjacent to ours would fill up with snow so deep you could walk along on top of the snow, level with the tops of the fence posts ( the posts were on top of high banks!). The farmer would come and dig our lane out with a JCB so he could get to the cattle. Even in my early 20's we had deep snow and on one occasion I walked up the drive ( to head to the bus stop to go work) and sunk up to my armpits in snow - my Dad had to haul me out of the snow whilst trying not to laugh. The Dogmother
I remember terrific snowfall in Norfolk when we were younger. On my first day at school (just over the road) in January 1968, the snow was so deep that Pops had to dig a trench up the drive and the snow went over my little red wellies. Didn't get snow days off school then.
chickencam
Huge flakes some the size of cottonwool balls have been falling here for about half an hour, they have not been sticking, and now we have smaller flakes coming thick and fast.
