Boring subject - food allergies

Recommended Posts

I know this is a bore - but has anyone got a soya and dairy allergy on the forum or a child with one. ES is allergic badly (as in anaphlaxis) to 4 nuts - not a problem as he can eat peanuts and hazelnuts. He has gastric probs andhas for yrs and his bloods recentely showed a possible problem with soya and dairy. we are on an elimination diet for 4 weeks. I have a handy booklet with lots of hints and have been studying labels and am shocked at if somethings dairy free its often got soya in or vice versa. I have found a marg to cook with and spread so can do my own bread, cakes etc - but he fancies a bit of chocolate. Dietician said some plain choc is ok. I have made a lasagne sucessfully with a bechamel out of oat milk - would love some handy hints if someone has any please.

Mods please can this stay on here rather than food section as I posted before and no one answered.

Hes also got a fixed brace so eating some things is difficult. To make like easier we are all eating the same to a degree. Have discovered sorbets and jelly of course for puds but need some ideas.

Thanks Ali

PS he can eat eggs

Oh gosh, that sounds like hard work for you all :(

I have no experience personally of food allergies but was talking to a lady the other day who has a 1 year old with allergies to dairy and soya (I think). I remember her comment of "Pure spread and oatmilk were my saviour"!

Hi there, no experience with allergies and you'd still have to watch out for the soya thing but vegans obviously avoid dairy, I found this website quite helpful...

What a nightmare, but good on for you for eating the same things as him, would be awful to watch everyone else tucking in to yummy food if you couldn't! Hope he's sorted soon :D

I look after my friend's son Mitchell (aged 3) who has a dairy, wheat, eggs, nuts, oats and sesame allergy (ALL at anaphylaxis level!!!!). Any use?

You can get dairy free chocolate in Sainsbury's which isn't bad. Hopefully it's either dairy OR soya that he has a problem with as one is easier to deal with than both.

Thanks everyone - I will go on these sites after work today. Have studied the allergy setion of Waitrse and Tesco and will do Sainsburys today along with health food shop. I hope they are knowledgable as some are some aren't. I worked in an allergy clinic yrs ago and in my defence I was young and very scetical (sp) re these things and felt many of the people were "precious" and jumped on the band wagon. Oh how things come back to haunt us. My OH keeps on about if its too much for son then leave it but alternative is another gastroscopy (he had one yrs ago) and I dont want to give up if it helps him. It is a faff and I got cross yesterday as OH was being critical and I lost it somewhat having tried to cook something that we could all eat without alienating my son. To add to all this hes not well not sure if its flu or what but hes really low. finding a nice bit of chocolate would perk him up.

Anyway enough moaning thanks for the support and I will let you know how I get on. Ali x

It's not cheap, but Willie's chocolate (remember that programme Willie's wonky chocolate factory?) is definitely both dairy and soya free. The ingredients are just cocoa mass, cocoa butter and sugar. You can buy it in Waitrose.

Plamil choc might be worth a look, it's definitely dairy free but I'm not sure about soya free. Many chocolate products contain soya lecithin as an emulsifier (Green and Black's certainly does). You can usually get Plamil in places such as Holland and Barrett.

Good luck, I hope you are able to find some ingredients and recipes that work for your family.

rice milk is pretty good - though it's a bit sweet and Mitchell wasn't keen. Then again so are many others. Have you had your son allergy tested yet? Mitchell is under Kings College in London and they are brilliant. He is re-tested every year to check the severity of the allergies (sadly they seem to be getting even worse at the moment). His mum gets a lot of nutritional support from them too.

My 12 year old son has autism and follows a very strict exclusion diet - must point out that he doesn't have allergies though.

The main recipe books I use for him are "Diet Intervention and Autism" and the "AiA Gluten & Dairy Free Cookbook" - don't be put off by the titles as they both contain lots of basic, easy recipes which indicate all of the nasties they are free of. They also have a lot of info on suppliers and societies.

Both are available from www.dietaryneedsdirect.co.uk where I also buy most of DS's food supplies and special sweets/chocs. This company is very helpful for people with specific dietary needs.

Wishing you luck, let me know if I can help with some basic recipes

I completely understand this as an issue, as it's been something Dave has had to put up with since being with Vikki, he doesn't like soya and Vikki can't have dairy products.

Vitalite is a sunflower marge and reasonably cheap too-makes very good cake anyway! Try rice milk too and check thoroughly through the lists of ingredients-it's a bore, but when you get to know the things you can buy it should make it easier. Go for Dark chocolate-there's a really nice organic dairy free one-I can't remember the name of it unfortunately-I think it's swiss...My Mum sells it at the health food shop she works in.

Yes he had the proper allergy tests (skin prick) for the nuts and some sort of blood test ? RAST test for the stomach probs. He has to trial the exclusions of soya and dairy for 2 weeks whilst on his Omeprazole tablets ( for his gastric problems) and 2 weeks without the tablets. Then back to gastroenterologist to report back. hes really down as hes unwell too ? viral so off to drs today as hes achey, snotty and chest and neck hurts.Poor baby - they seemed very interested in his birth as I had forceps delivery - any midwives on forum - do babies from difficult deliveries suffer more health probs? The Dr kept coming back to this. Thanks everyone for the hints. Will google Autism link too.

Could be a link to his birth delivery - I know that my osteopath has treated lots of babies and children who had forceps or other 'difficult' births; he once said that they can have a whole load of other problems linked to that.

I was a forceps baby, but thankfully haven't had any other problems as a result.

I hope that you get it sorted soon.

Claret - ES had cranial osteopathy as a baby and they said the same. We are all ear, nose, throat and asthma plus gastric in this household so heridtary as well. YS was an elective casarian babe - hes got asthma, gets lots of throat and ear infections so in our case its in the genes.

Hazard - i do feel for you - in all my yrs in nursing I have never seen anaphylaxis and I see it in my son - no epipen, on holiday in Torquay in the wilds but thankfully very near a good hosp. Now we are more geared up. i will push for re testing when hes 18 before uni in case he leaves home as I want to see if hes outgrown them. Trying to get a teen to carry an epeipen is a job in itself. they are long and awkward( the pens not the teenagers well ok mine is 6ft and awkward  ) Hey ho joys of being a mum I s'pose sorry brain and fingers working separately
