Dog Tags

Recommended Posts

Our trainer at puppy classes has told us that dog tags have to have (Control of Dogs Order 1992) name and address of owner on it.

They have to have that to take the KC Good Citizens tests so we'll probably have one made........but the ones we have only have a mobile number on and another has landline and dog's name......we dithered about having the dog's name on it as that seemed too much info. really.

We can have just the first line of address, postcode and our name......good job or Jazz would be on her knees with the size of tag needed for full address

Does everyone else comply? - has anyone heard of anyone ever being fined for not having all the correct information on a tag?

I had to look at Riley's tag to see what we had on it  .

We have his name, the first line of our address and our phone number (which gives the area code in case we're away fom home) and on the other side both our mobile numbers.

I have heard you shouldn't have the dog's name on it but it's the tone of voice rather than a name that dogs respond to, isn't it, so I wouldn't think that matters.

I didn't realise this until we got Candy last year and I was looking for tags for her  Candy and Ruby have their name, our surname and phone number on one side and our house number, street and postcode on the other. We decided to put the street on as well as the number in case they just wandered in the village and were found round the corner (that has happened to us in the past when our old retriever was between tags because we'd moved. She was picked up round the corner and taken to a pound 20 miles away  ) We got Candy's tag from PetsatHome - you put your details into the machine and it automatically engraves it for you. Actually all Candy's info is on one side of her tag, but it's not too big. Writing's a bit small in places though  We sent off for Ruby's via our normal pet food/country store. They faxed the details to the company and the tag came in the post 2 days later! Very impressive! And cheaper than PAH

It's not a legal requirement in cats so far as I know, but it does help to identify that cat as yours even if it is chipped.

We had a cat adopt us a coupl eo fyears back and there was a mobile number on its tag. When I called, it turned out that the owners lived a couple of streets away and had gone on holiday, the cat was being looked after, but missed home life.

Yes, we have a 'microchipped tag' too.

Most lurchers have one, some also have one saying 'this animal is neutered'; lurchers are often near the top of the stolen dog list - some 'sorts' nick them to breed from and use for hunting. If someone I don't know, or am suspicious of asks what Ruby is, I always just tell them that she's a cross-breed.
