ubereglu
I'm feeling sorry for my sister and her husband, they were due to be flying out from Manchester this afternoon to go to Budapest for their 1st wedding anniversary and her birthday, so I shouldn't think that they're best pleased...didn't want to risk phoning them to ask. What will be an interesting issue is whether insurance will cover it if they can't go, as many insurers are trying to wriggle out of paying up already. RE the volcano, the geography group went out to Iceland for a week after the first eruption, (came back Easter weekend) and got to see it. There was a evacuation zone set in place, as if it does spit out lava it has hydroplastic flows-fast flowing lava-which is very dangerous. It does send out warning signs though with all the ash and things to start with.
Christian
Well, OH landed safely 2 more aircraft landed after him and then they shut Heathrow. Only open for emergencies now. The ground staff must be having a nightmare Unfortunately, when your holiday is up the creek, people don't think that it is an 'Act of God'. They blame you, personally. Just seen this on BBC news - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8620352.stm?ls Rivers rising rapidly and 800 evacuated. The damage is unreal. Really feel for them all, especially after the economic collapse. Not sure how that would work really, as it's the first time they've had to ever shut down the whole of the UK airspace, so it can't be your own fault surely?? Christian
Trust me Liz, having worked in the terminals for 5 years, with fog so think you couldn't see your hand in front of your face, you still get blamed for a delay/cancellation! Nowt queer as folk. Not sure how that would work really, as it's the first time they've had to ever shut down the whole of the UK airspace, so it can't be your own fault surely?? They shut the UK airspace after 9/11 and people still complained about the extra security.
JanTheDiver
I live 15 mins from Stansted Airport and the garden has been quiet today, there is usually a plane in the air when your'e out there. I know it has caused chaos but I have enjoyed the peace and quiet
Seagazer
I must admit its been lovely not to have the constant planes going overhead
Guest
I worked for a major telecoms company during 9/11 and a lot of our equipment was in the twin towers and it caused chaos with many networks but I have to say, people were totally understanding, even companies that were losing millions! I've worked in cust svcs for about 20 years and the majority of people understand when things are out of your control. It's usually the stupid, minor things they get angry over, or if you (meaning the company you work for) are causing the problem. ah well, glad I'm out of all that now. I've just seen/heard a helicopter go overhead, the girls freaked, they've had peace and quiet all day so the sudden noise caused a full on chicken panic! ubereglu
Well, their insurance company won't pay, but GOOD NEWS! The airline have refunded the tickets and the hotel they were due to stay at has said they can rearrange for them to stay another time. For the minute they've gone to Anglesey instead. AJuff
OH was due home from a four day work trip to Egypt tonight! He's stuck with the plane and crew unable to take off. I wonder when he'll be home????????? We do miss him.
sadietoo
Sadly I don't believe insurance will pay out for anyone who's holiday has been affected...its and act of god and they are never covered Still better to be safe than to be travelling I think in these circumstances. Joojoo
One of my friends is stranded in Northern Germany. He was supposed to fly back this afternoon to John Lennon Airport in Liverpool. The airline have rebooked him onto another flight early on Saturday morning but obviously that's only if everything is ok by then. I know it's a huge inconvenience for so very many people but at least they are safe which ultimately is the important thing. I just hope the same can be said for the Icelandic people. Willow
Christian Said ...mail from work asking for volunteers. If they hadn't cut back on so many staff, they wouldn't need them! I'm curious is this to help out with customer rebookings/queries ? as there wouldn't seem much call for additional cabin crew ?

Think it is more to do with queue combing and the odd sessions of sandwich flinging. No flights, so no crew as such needed.
chelsea
I've worked in cust svcs for about 20 years and the majority of people understand when things are out of your control. Doesn't work with airline passengers I'm afraid Poet! Fog, Ice, snow, ash, a broken plane - nothing is more important than them and their journey! I've succumbed to my guilt and on my day off I am going to work at 5am tomorrow morning to help out - dunno what is wrong with me?!!
jlo
DS is supposed to be going to Iceland for a geography trip next month. I(n my day we went to Scarborough!) I really hope that all those affected by the cancelled flights are ok - as well as all the poor people in Iceland itself. I think that the effects of this will be felt for many years to come even if the eruption isn't that long!
Helly Welly
OH is meant to be flying to Las Vegas for an IT conference on Saturday morning but it's looking increasingly unlikely. It'll be bad for the company to miss the conference as it was a major opportunity to get new clients but also, OH was really looking forward to going to Vegas Last year he flew to Hong Kong for work and his airline went bust whilst he was out there
Chook n Boo Mum
I've succumbed to my guilt and on my day off I am going to work at 5am tomorrow morning to help out - dunno what is wrong with me?!! You have a kind heart Chelsea, that's all that's "wrong" with you I managed to miss most of this yesterday as we were at a funeral & the radio news on the long journey didn't offer much in the way of information ...........I think we may have seen two of the last planes coming in to Heathrow though, it was very eerie not having the usual hum of planes & seeing the sliproads from the M25 & M23 to Heathrow and Gatwick so quiet . As has been said before for the safety of the Icelandic folk.........and patience to the stranded travellers - surely safe & stranded is better than the potential alternative ..........of course the last time this volcano blew there was no air travel to worry about Sha x

There was someone on TV last night ranting about it. They would the the first to complain if there was a crash - if they weren't dead that is. I used to watch those Easyjet programmes and was always amazed when folk who were late went mad at the staff for not just opening the plane door and letting them on. It's always someone else's fault Really quiet in the skies round here though, I'm on flight path from Birmingham airport and it's the first time in ages that the skies are quiet and no vapour trails criss crossing all over the place
docsquid
We didn't get much of a sunset last night, as it was cloudy, but this morning, there is a pink tinge to the few high clouds, even now at 9.30. I think the sunset should be brilliant provided it doesn't cloud over completely. We're hoping to go to Iceland in November to see all the sights, so I hope it has finished erupting by then!
