Very sad news

Recommended Posts

Our Nugget went the same way two weeks ago. I get the feeling not only from this forum, but internet research in general, once a hen has a prolapse they don't recover well. Does anybody have a hen that got better afterwards ? I found the hardest part of trying to help Nugget, was keeping the prolapse from "dying", overnight the skin turned black and she deteriorated. I don't mean for this reply to be in any way upsetting for readers, but I would like to know more about this condition in case it ever happens again to any of our girls. I would like to think that I can do my best for them. I am so sorry to read about poor little Betty, I know exactly how you feel and bless her little heart, she has no more discomfort. :(

sorry to hear about Betty, RIP little one.

jennydavies - my vet told me that removing the oviduct (I think) is not too difficult and the hen should then be OK. But like your poor Nugget, Harriet's prolapse had started to get necrotic by the time I could get her to the avian vet and he said the toxins would kill her so the kindest thing to do would be to have her pts. It would seem that being able to get to an experienced vet asap gives them the best chance.
