thinking about going to cornwall

Recommended Posts

You looking for busy or quiet?

Avoid Avoid Avoid - Newquay. Just full of stag and hen parties now. :(

South - We like Looe, Falmouth and the Roseland peninsula (St Mawes) is quite quiet.

North - We like the Port Isaac, Tintagel, Boscastle area - rugged coastline with some lovely little beaches and quaint little streets to wander around.

We stayed in Malpas near Truro a couple of years ago in Heron Cottage...it was right on the river and absolutely lovely. (Only snag was that the road was very narrow and choked with parked cars for about a mile....you should be ok in Sept though.)

The cottage featured in an episode of Wycliffe.

Tintagel is gorgeous. We stayed in Widemouth Bay (near Bude) once which was great for Tintagel, Boscastle and north Devon. If you're in that area, Clovelly is a MUST!

I have also stayed in a remote cottage on the moors between Penzance and St Ives. We could see the sea on both sides of the peninsular. :D in that area, you have to visit St Michael's Mount and Mousehole. Also the Minerva Theatre.

Wherever you go, I'm sure you'll love it! :D

That's the beach Ginette. Widemouth bay. Couldn't remember the name (I had great joy in prounouncing it incorrectly! -How could I forget that) There is a great pub on the main road just on the hill that sells fab food, especially fish. We had a great time watching the surf down there, and the wide open space is just great for getting rid of those cobwebs. There's also a little excluded bay round that area too, of which the name fails me again

Had a weekend in Padstow, with the obligatory Stein restaurant experience thrown in for my birthday a couple of years ago. Food and views were stupendous, but it is very commercialised, with 6 (at last count) Stein eatieries, the cheapest being the fish and chip shop.

The eden Project in Cornwall is outstanding, if you like the garden experience. We stayed in a caravan park for a couple of days last year and took the children - it was a fab break. 8)

I was lucky enough to stay in a friends 'holiday' flat in Padstow (just off the main harbour) when I was around 20 (some 15 years ago now) and we had the pleasure of experiencing Padstow's May Day festivities. Anybody heard of the Hobby Horse Celebrations, or rather, The Obby 'Oss, as they call it?

Great fun. I seem to remember it involved drinking copious amounts of ale, being caught under the skirt of the bizarre looking hobby horse and singing the same rhyme over and over about summer being on it's way.

I don't remember seeing Rick Stein's gaff back then, but I was a poor student at the time and eating out meant fish and chips in the wrapper!

We live in Helston the beaches are good around here to Falmouth way and towards Hayle - Penzance. The national trust gardens are very good and lots of them.

We usually have some good weather in September, th girls have gone back to school but we go down to the beach after school.

Enjoy 8)

I had my wedding reception at Clovelly - it's just down the road from me :D I did toy with having our wedding there because the church is part of a team ministry with my parish church but decided to stay in my own parish in the end. The reception was lovely though. All our local friends joined us and our families for a big knees up by the harbour.

I can thoroughly recommend North Devon/Cornwall but then I would wouldn't I?!

It was lovely even if I do say so myself  But we were spared the walk back up - we fully booked the Red Lion Inn at the bottom and stayed the night in a lovely room at the end with a balcony overlooking the sea and harbour 8) - we had a big family breakfast in the morning - it was pretty special I have to say as we were treated to a couple of dolphins (or porpoise) swimming around outside the harbour and a seal playing around too. My new hubby drove me back up the hill the next day

Yep 8)

Although they don't carry the shopping anymore - they use big burly men to pull grocery sledges down the hill these days. They used the donkey's until about 10 years ago - now they're just a tourist attraction.

You can go to their website here and if you click on "weddings" you can see a piccie of me and hubby! (I'm the one with the very pink flowers)
