The Weather Thread # 6

Wind speeds in Scotland have been recorded at 130 MPH

Sparksymum, no we didn't get the panels. It turned out that the panels on offer would not produce enough hot water for a 4 person household :? It was going to cost over £10,000 for us to get panels to suit our needs. The advisor did remark that we are in the perfect location for a wind turbine

Stay safe ANH and LL. I heard Southern parts of Scotland are in for a battering.

Trying too, it is really windy  I kept the girls in the run today and have just battled out to close their door. The lights have been flickering (candles and torches are ready) and I have heard that in some areas the power is off. There have been trees down locally too. OH travelling home by train from down south, he has been told they may stop the service before Glasgow

Hope your OH gets home OK, LolaLayla :anxious: .

My OH left work at lunch as did YS so at least we're all home safe. It's pretty wild out there but I have to say, I'm sure we've had weather just as bad before. We'll see what, if any, damage there is in the morning.

I'd like to go and see how the girls are but don't really fancy going outside :anxious: .

Edit: I felt a bit guilty so braved the wind and rain. Sensible Poppy was in the eglu but the other three needed coaxing in. It'll be the first time they've all spent a night in the eglu together  .

Is your OH home yet LolaLayla?

I have just text OH asking him to come home. He is in town with DD coaching the swimming club so probably will not have his phone poolside but you never know.

The wind eased a little this afternoon but now it is back. I have given up watching the TV as I had to keep turning up the volume as the wind got louder, the wind is horrendous now with torrential rain.

DD was warned at school that the school might be closed tomorrow due to the blizzards expected overnight.

DS has just come in. He had another hour at work but every one has been sent home.

OH says train is going slower due to the weather conditions. I suppose there may be debris on the line :? He probably won't be home until nearer 11pm. The wind does not seem as bad just now so I hope we have seen the worst of it. Although there are still strong gusts.

I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you tomorrow Ali-s as it looks as if your part of the world is going to feel the brunt of the wintry showers. Hope your family are all home safe soon.

ANH - Glad all are safe home. My girls had both gone to bed when I went out but the rabbits were sitting in their run getting blown about. They have a lovely hutch in a shed to go into but still prefer outside

My thoughts are with you up there, stay warm and safe.

It has been pretty wild here, but nothing like you have been getting. I had to take the office post at 4.45pm just as the heavy rain really hit, I got a tad soggy. I am just covering for the young receptionist who is taking a couple of days leave, she either chose her days well or badly depending on your perspective.

You should all move down south!

I would love to :!: One of my neighbours has just put her house on the market and hopes to move south. Said she just can't face another winter here :( I'm really sad she will be going but I understand completely how she feels. Sometimes it feels like we have two seasons. A very long winter followed by autumn.

It's been breezy here on the south coast, and you would not want to be going on a ferry today, but Imy thoughts have been with all the omleteers w'up north today...I hope you are all safe and warm and haven't sustained any damage...high winds are very scarey, I still remember the "hurricane" of 1986 vividly.. :(

I would love to :!:

Me too :?

After 20 years up here I am ready to go home. I love the people, the scenery and my home up here but the last two harsh winters and lack of summers have made me feel increasing homesick. My family will never move and have told me so, so I will stay but it is not easy.

It was on the news this morning that thousands are without power. I feel very lucky that we seem to have got away lightly in this little corner of Scotland: I've lost the felting off the shed roof and next doors fence has been blown over but other than that all is good.

It has just started snowing quite heavily though, hope it doesn't stick!

The blizzards did not arrive here apart from a small snow shower this afternoon which lasted a few minutes.

The wind last night blew out a couple of perspex windows in OH's workshop, a couple of slates came off the roof, the garden is littered with the contents of the recycling wheelie bins, the remaining part of the log store roof was shredded and the fencing around my veg garden is no more. I wanted to extend the veg garden anyway so the wind did me a favour by blowing down the fencing :D The Brussel sprout plants and the PSB took a battering, I am not sure they will survive.

Only casualties from yesterday were the bat box which was blown off a wooden arch and the Christmas lights at the front of the house which came down :D We were lucky as a friends tree had to be felled today as it started to split and was threatening to fall towards neighbours homes and a greenhouse. Today was so calm in comparison, although we had sleet, and it is freezing now........brrrr
