What is it with men & driving in the snow?

My husband looks out of the window & he is like 'challenge accepted'

I look out at 5 inches of snow & think that there is no way I am driving in THAT!

The Bus route has detoured away from our village,we are very high up,the road outside our house is deep in snow,& yet he is insisting I try to drive into work.

There are actually people skiing along my road :lol:

Well the fire is stacked but I realised that I have run out of porridge oats!:lol::lol:

Mortimer the Mini did a fine job up the country lane to the co op. Wasn't quite so good getting up the hill back home

The 'main' road is icy slush and lethal, so glad I only had to be on it for 2 minutes. They is no way I could have made it to the main A road to get to the motorway.

OH landed back safely and spent 30 minutes trying to get the snow off his car (he left the 'emergency winter survival box' in the utility room this week  ). The M3 from the M25 hasn't been gritted and he sent me some pictures from his phone. 5mph at most for 2 junctions, but from junction 4-8 he said it had been grited and snow ploughed 8) Expecting him home in 30 minutes or so (IF he can make it down the lane in his daft rear wheel drive BMW)!

We've got about 2 inches or so here in North East Hampshire. Started snowing about 8 am but stopped about 11ish. Foraged for food 1st thing this morning in town, roads not great and no grit so not going out again in the car. Very impressed with Omlet though - they delivered our netting this morning 2 days early :D . Shame him indoors has the perfect excuse not to make a start on assembling the hen house. Going to have to wait a little longer for our feathered friends methinks :( .

Started snowing heavily here about 30 mins ago (border of East London/Essex) and it's now coming down thick and fast. I went out at 9 this morning to post final parcels, cards etc and pick up a few bits of shopping. I'm supposed to be singing in a concert tonight with some friends ... feeling slightly guilty at saying this because lots of people will be disappointed, but I'm almost hoping it's cancelled because apart from that, for once I don't have to go ANYWHERE this weekend. I might actually finish wrapping all the presents and relax for once!

I got up at 6.50 am to minus 11.6 degrees and no more snow than yesterday - it rapidly went to minus 7 by 10am and started to snow at that - never used to snow at that temps - I decided to go the 2 miles down hill to the shops to top up and get lottery etc and took 20 mins to defrost car and off I went - snow started to thicken and by the time I came back we had had 3 more inches - roads quiet so easy to come up the 2 miles uphill keep going and 5th gear is the answer - however thankfully it stopped so I could clean out the girls via the egg port yet again as we have a fair bit of snow now and they are not happy bunnies - they have just finished moulting and not laying thankfully so keeping their energy in keeping warm - they are fine though even though its frosty.

We have just over an inch here most of which fell between 7 - 8.30am. very low night time temps forecast I am worried about my girls if we go away. The pet carer is coming in early morning to check their water isn't frozen, but it may re-freeze. I am also worried that if we get away will we get back again :?

We haven't had any more since yesterdays light dusting. The sky is going a funny colour as I type. I have cleaned out the chooks this morning (it was so cold the poo had frozen solid!). I have completed todays outside jobs and have now got the housework to do and a few pressies to wrap. Off to Peterborough in the morning with LMW to deliver pressies to my Dad, I just hope we don't have too much snow.

Things to remember when cleaning chickens in cold conditions:

(1) When you have defrosted the drinker and refilled it, be careful about any spilled water. By the time you've finished faffing around with the hens and returned to the patio, the puddle that you left will have frozen solid and be right where you put your foot

(2) When trying to dislodge frozen poo from the nesting box/poo tray, don't use too much force. It will eventually come free just as you give it an almighty shove, and is guaranteed to fly upwards and hit you in the face

(3) Beware - just because your fingers are cold and you can't feel them, doesn't mean you don't need gloves. Hiding amongst the frozen poo will be a sneaky fresh soft one. You'll only find out when you put your hand in it ...

First time in years I've had to put my wellies on in the back garden. Went out earlier and it came over the top of my walking boots!

Garden birds have just had 'silver service'! Put their seed and mealworms on a large tray and put it beneath the hawthorn to try and keep it from disappearing or getting covered too quick.

Absolutely tipping down here!

Presume this is from experience!!

I have just done ours - I wear latex gloves which get peeled off and disposed off each time after the clean up poo bit but today the newspaper was really stuck to the bottom of the poo tray - but peeled off ok with poo on it but the poo was solid and felloff - had to pick up all of it but it was all frozen thankfully - have put some bokashi bran in the tray to try and stop the smell a bit as they have not been out much for the last 3 weeks and I cannot wash the stuff at the moment! :-( poor things I feel so sorry for them and gave them some sweetcorn they already had cous cous this morning!

At least 6" in Abingdon and it's just stopping. Phillip has retired to his " room" with Mrs Phillip the first, and has demanded room service, others huddled in eglu covered runs- and I've just cleared the tops so they can have some daylight. One ex-bat and one aracauna out in the snow - and me? Inside now!
