Awful fortnight - lost 3 girls -now 6

Recommended Posts

oh Janty,

i remember reading with great delight about your rescue of those chooks, how sad! :( 21 months is just no time at all, is it?

My hybrids are dropping like flies too: i won't ever get any more, pure breeds for me cause the heartache is just too great,

lots of love,

I know exactly what you mean.

In three and a bit years of chickens keeping I have never experienced such a bad time.

We also lost my original pekin, Popcorn last weekend and Nugget (another of my old pekins) took a turn for the worse in the week (vet reckins she is having mini strokes). Tonight I came home from work to find that a fox (possibly) has taken my two young hybrids. I know that I shouldn't have let them free range all day...I'd become complacent as we had never seen a fox in the garden. Thankfully all my pekins and Orps who were also out today are ok.

AAAAAaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I really could scream....or at least ring something's furry neck.

:(

Oh Janty, I'm so sorry for you, I lost one of my girls last week and I know how much you're hurting. They are such wonderful little creatures you can't help loving them which is why it's so hard when they go. But as many have already said, they obviously had great lives with you and were much loved.

So sorry to hear your sad news. I always think that the depth of our sadness when we lose a pet, is only the reverse of the love we feel for them...so your girls were lucky to have spent their time on the planet with you. and to have been truly loved and appreciated, whilst at the same time being given every comfort a chicken could ask for. Take comfort from the fact that you could have done no more to give them happy lives.xxxx

Sending lots of love and Brahma cuddles your way.

Don't beat yourself up about the girls lost to a fox. For those of us who chose to freerange all day every day it's the risk we take. We know sooner or later our luck will run out.

This cold hard weather is bound to take the weakest. I've got a wobbly looking ex-batt and a Pekin grower that aren't looking too great but there is nothing we can do about it. Nature is cruel.

I'm sorry to hear that you have lost more girls. I know just how you are feeling - I lost 7 of my little darlings over the course of a fortnight earlier this year, and I just felt completely numb. I couldn't even cry at the time, it was so awful. I still feel a pang when I think of the girls who should be running around with the others but, as has already been said, it is nature and there is only so much we can do. I know that my girls had wonderful, albeit short, lives and the same is true of your girls too.

Very sorry to hear your very sad news Janty - I can't quite imagine what its like to lose so many in such a short space of time. I'm sorry to hear about your girls as well Tweety, it must have been very tough to cope with. All I can do is echo the support from everyone and say better times will be round the corner; when you're ready.
