Chucky Mama
I have an issue with the odd rat and fat pigeons stealing my chicken food. I have a galvanised treadle feeder that I just don't get on with as food jam, gets damp and the chickens manage to throw it all over the floor defeating the object. I had asked the menfolk of my house to make me a feeder that I had seen on youtube but to no avail - so, I shamed them and made one myself!! (with a little help OH was shamed into being my technical advisor ) Here it is I am really chuffed as I am the most rubbish person at making things. I am planning putting it in the cube run so that they can get up and help themselves in the morning and allow me the odd lie in Checked the weight of my lightest chicken would open it Weighted down until the girls get used to using it
beach chick
wow that's amazing! well done you dont get on with my treadle feeder either, but am thinking of just taking the treadle thing off so its permanently open - all feeders are in the WIR now and dont seem to get any visitors in there. Duncan08
That looks great! You should patent it, with the increase in chicken keeping you could be onto a winner there.

The Dogmother
That's brilliant CM, so clever. Do I spy an old chopping board on the base?
Chucky Mama
Do I spy an old chopping board on the base? Yes, it's not part of the feeder though, I am going to sit it on there until I have a little mat for it to sit on and I don't want it to go directly onto the wet ground (it is weather proofed but at the moment I am treating it like my baby )
Jools
Quick, patent it!! This time next year, you will be a millionaire

Geoid
Just a thought, when you tested it, the weights were on the end of the ramp, did you also put the weights near the box (the other end of the ramp) ?
Lavenders_Blue
Chucky Mama, that's brilliant! Chucky Mama
p.s. you have really confused me by changing your avatar sorry I had to change my avatar as it seemed to be causing forum problems for me what happens if 1 or more chickens are sat on top of the lid? or am i been thick Flying chickens maybe?! you can just see them using it as some sort of attempt at escape over the wall - seriously, it just wouldn't open but my girls are extremely unlikely to perch on top of it as they just don't do that sort of thing. Whilst not always the brightest, they catch on to this sort of thing very quickly. I only put it out yesterday and by the end of the day they were getting the idea. Hopefully I will be able to post photos or a video of them using it soon Fred - yes I did check the weight over the whole of the platform area to make sure the lid would be activated wherever it was. We also made sure that the lid will not shut quickly and cause any injury. It is very 'soft' closing so wont be any problem.
Plum
Well done. We need to see a video of it in use
Space Chick
Not wanting to rain on your parade as I couldn't have made one but what happens if Chicken 1 is on the ramp, chicken 2 notices it's open and starts to eat from the side, chicken 1 has enough food, steps off, chicken 2 is eating... The lid closes.....
Chicken Shirl
It's a great idea. My chooks would hop straight into the box of feed and get shut in. They are all very small though. Would love to see a vid of them using it.

The lid closes..... They already do this and the lid closes slowly so they just move their heads out. I tested it by putting my hand in as it closes to make sure there wouldn't be any accidental decapitations and the lid closed very gently.
