New WIR and chicks with photo's (Hopefully)

Recommended Posts

Well after many months of planning and one months hard labour building it, my new WIR is ready. The run was finished last Wednesday and had 6 new inmates by Thursday. I bought the chicks from Hinchcliffes of Huddersfield and am very pleased with them.

They have all settled in well with no squabbles. I am still trying to work out which lady is at the top of the pecking list. My money is currently on the Speckled Rock as boss. They love the Garvo layers pellets.

The only issue that I have is getting them into the coop at night. They much prefer to roost on the apex of the coop than inside it. I may just leave them to stay there.

Never seen a wir in an angle like that, we have funny little corners in our garden cos it's diamond shaped, might go show oh that when he's in a good mood

Because the shape is almost triangular it was a bit of a nightmare to plan and build  . There were some major changes during the build. The biggest single issue was the slope and direction of the roofing, I decided that the low point was best on the longest edge which is 18.5 feet long (That's the far 'wall' in the photo).

That looks great and I love the shape. Pretty girls - if they are happy to roost I would leave them :D

All six were roosting on the apex at dusk tonight......I've just left them there. If Mr. Fox is around there is no way he can get to them but it wouldn't harm to scare them a bit eh?

I'm not too happy about them roosting on the apex when there is a coop with 6 nest boxes below them. Anyway with my luck one will lay it's first egg up there and it will roll and smash on the ground........Mental note to increase the depth of Rapport around the coop :D .

I would like to thank everybody for their positive comments on both the run and chicks.

Here are a few statistics:-

70 off 63mm(2.5") X 38mm(1.5") X 2.4m C16 grade timber treated with Lifetime wood treatment and dark oak pigment.

10 X 3m long clear corrugated roofing panels. 200 fixing screws.

Countless 2.5" and 3" decking screws. Dowels and wood glue.

40 yards of 1" x1/2" galvanised welded mesh. At least 2000 14mm staples ( Thank God that I bought an electric stapler.

2 bales of Rapport rape straw for the floor and bedding.

Plus other bits and bats to complete the job.

These are going to be seriously expensive eggs
