chestnutmare
Those of you who have bantams, could you post a picture here and give some information? I'd love a couple of cuties and space is limited now that we've moved... I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to nose at pictures of chickens. Plum
You only have to ask once Budgie-buff orp bantam, Crow -lavender Pekin, Coot and Hen - Wyandottes ES defends himself against the dangerous Crow Little Budgie Little Coot Are you expanding
chestnutmare
Oo Plum, I love them all. What are their temperaments like? Egg laying/broodiness? I'm not expanding just yet... seeing as we had the WIR for the chickens put up before we even got furniture for the new house, OH would say NO! But give me time... Also have to think if the shed really is needed.

Plum
Budgie is very cute and shy and always in the background. Coot is fun and friendly, Crow is a character always mumbling, friendly but likes things to happen on her terms. Hen has been broody 4 times and very hormonal with it. She's a scream strutting round grumbling at everyone. When not broody she is a calm lovely girl but not as approachable as Coot. Not expanding yeh right. Sorry forgot egg laying. Wyandottes lay 4 or 5 times a week and the other two when they feel like it but really can't be bothered too busy chasing flies.

Space Chick
Technically they are large fowl Silkies, but more the size of a typical large bantam rather than traditional large fowl Introducing Melody (Black Silkie) and River (Blue Silkie)
Redwing
Flat and frizzle Pekin youngsters, Pekins are good with people and a little feisty with other birds, if you are ever going to mix large fowl and bantams the pekin is a good choice Silkies, these are a little ditsy and live in a world of their own, they can be bullied by others but in an easygoing group they should be ok Wyandotte bantams, these are my favourite of all breeds, they are docile and friendly This is my lad Tarzan who can be left alone to rotate in front of the hairdryer after a bath

chestnutmare
Thanks for posting! I do like pekins, and the frizzles! I also think the wyandotte bantams are beautiful too. I admire the silkies but are they meant to be kept super dry due to their fluffy feathers? I don't think the bantams that I might (uh-hem) get will be mixed with my three hybrids anyway. They'd have to go in a new WIR or Eglu and run. The annoying thing is - my garden gently slopes! How annoying when you have an and run! I'm going to admire them all again now... goodinparts
You are ALL so good at photographing your girls...Any tips? All my attempts are absolutely rubbish- they move at the wrong second etc etc...so I can't show you my beautiful bantams...though I really want to. All advice gratefully received... A list won't have the same effect, but I'll tell you about them anyway... 2 Belgian d'Anvers, Prudence & Patience (who came from Reading Bantam Show, thanks to encouragement from Lewis & Debs) (these are the most sociable...clearly they were hand reared, as they love a good snuggle) 2 Pekins, Hope & Charity, from Mini Meadows (Hope is quite shy, but a darling all the same.. Charity a bit of a bully) 2 Frizzles, Joy & Serena from Debs....(very sweet & friendly...specially Serena, who is, I think, my favourite....but please dont tell the others...) I love them all....They are so pretty & endearing pootling about the garden...some of them even lay eggs

squiffs
Re: Silkies - they're fine getting wet, they just may sometimes prefer to be dry. You can bathe silkies, and if you felt really sorry for them after they got wet you could dry them off. Doris my littlest silkie has a weird head wobble tic, and when she eats things like orange it means the juice flies everywhere and makes her pom pom clump together, so I usually sit her on my lap with some tissue and warm water giving the pom pom a wash to unstick it all I too was worried about them getting wet, so I have a shower curtain over their run, but they largely stay in the drier spots if it rains, don't mind a little bit of rain, and I think a google image search of 'wet silkie' throws up a cute and amusing picture of a sodden silkie who obviously enjoys the rain Doris after her wash
chestnutmare
Thanks for that squiffs - good to know I don't have to rule out silkies. As for photographing, I too take lots and lots of pictures and use the odd couple that happen to be decent ones.

Chortle Chook
Ooo I've looked through this once, then again, and had to go back yet again. I feel I absolutely MUST HAVE Space Chick's 'River' but might also pocket Doris the gold Silkie and Bella the Columbiann Pekin together with Millie the millfleur Pekin. Here are two opposites of mine. Banty Frizzle - Dandelion Banty Silkie - Doodle
