So gutted - my horse was pts on Friday

Recommended Posts

I am so totally gutted and lost. My beautiful Welsh Cob Tide was pts at Bristol Vet School on Friday.

We tried everything to try to cure and then control the facial pain she had due to the trigeminal neuropathy (also known as head shaking syndrome).

We initially went down the allergy route trying nose nets, face nets, soaked hay, haylage, keeping in during the day, change of bedding, food etc. We then tried steriods and nothing worked. She then went for investigations at our local surgery (head X-ray, ear,eye and nose investigations, teeth, back etc) but they could find nothing.

The next step was investigations at Bristol where they diagnosed the facial pain syndrome due to trigeminal neuropathy using nerve blocks but also ruling other things out by repeating the head x-rays, ears, eyes, nose, teeth investigations and checking the guttural pouches and scoping her. We then tried the surgery using the platinum coils to compress the nerve in October last year. This didn't work and she continued to head shake. I took the decision to try the surgery once more as this has helped some horses and she had more platinum coils put on her nerve in Feb this year. She had a total of 10 coils on each side of the nerve trying to stop the over firing.

This i'm sorry to say also didn't work and the disease continued to get worse with her rubbing her face in the field and continuing to suffer from jerky head movements even when at rest. We have been trying gabapentin over the last month or so but this again hasn't worked and she was starting to cause herself injury so after many discussions with my vet and the expert at Langford we decided the best thing for Tide would be to put her to sleep to finally stop the pain.

I am so gutted as I have lost my best friend.

Oh Lotty I am so sorry, such an incredibly hard decision. Please take comfort knowing you have made the right decision for her and you didn't make it lightly, you did your absolute best for her and tried everything you could.

My heart really goes out to you xx

Don't normally post re things like this, but as a rider, I know the relationship you have with your horse is so strong, and all that you have been through together, I am really thinking of you. It is so very hard, take care and look after yourself. Remember the good times. A horse I used to ride a very long time ago, was pts last week and that was old age. Your horse will be in the puffy clouds with mine looking down on you. Only, mine will be busy escaping and hogging all the polos!
