Mrs_B
Honestly, my hen Mog makes the most hysterical noise I have heard - but I have had suspicions about she being a HE - but I have had two eggs on the odd occasion which stopped this theory?! Plus their feathering looks almost the same to me but I am no expert. She's been making the following noise for 6 months now: I only caught the end of her doing this on video, and this was a while ago (the bald patch on their fronts have now grown feathers back!) My neighbours claim they don't mind this loud noise at 5am...and apparently they like it! Any strange noises from anyone else's hens? x
mullethunter
Blimey! Don't know what to make of that! She looks like a he to me too but an egg is an egg! Not much help - sorry
Luvachicken
Quite a sweet noise really, but don't know what it means. I have heard mine purring and having a little conversation when one of them finds something nice but not any noise like yours does
Mrs_B
Thanks, both! I found it really odd as she hasn't done it her whole life, but it's quite regular now. I only get the odd two eggs from the pair, maybe only once a month at the moment? Could my other hen be laying two eggs? Maybe I should take a photo to try and figure the feathering out to be sure. I hope someone comes along and says their orpington makes this crazy sound - on a few occasions she's gotten very very loud and I've had to intervene with mealworms x
Egluntyne
Unless you actually catch her in the act of laying, I'd remain suspicious.
patsylabrador
One of mine makes a noise like that. Sounds like a cockerel with a sore throat. She's roughly five years old and has always been a she. Same kind of chicken, almost identical to yours. Maybe it's a thing that type do. She's a bantam. gavclojak
Indeed egluntyne.....I think she is in fact a little lad.....sounds like a lad in the practice stages of a cock-a-doodle-doo
LizzieLloyd
My little girl does a VERY convincing cocka doodle doo and she's definitely a girl and is still laying
The Dogmother
Sounds like a young cockerel learning to crow to me. Mind you, one of my old girls (now deceased) used to crow after a fashion - didn't last long after I blasted her in the face with a water pistol a couple of times! Cat tails
Water pistol... Interesting... Might need one
redcharlie43
If my 4 made this noise in the morning I would be delighted. Mine salute the sun every morning. That means they stand on various levels in the run facing the sun and shout! A bit like an egg announcement but louder and more annoying. Luckily "Ooops, word censored!"ody has complained yet but but every now and then they get the "hose" warning so i can get a few more hours sleep! Cat tails
Mine don't do egg announcements. Mine only announce their rumbling tummies. Cinnamon sometimes tries to impersonate a kookaburra and very loud too!
Claireabella
I can't say I've heard mine making that noise but Barbara does wail when she wants to come out of the run Just to add, water pistols are also great for introductions. The aggressor soon learns to associate a nasty skirt of water with bad behaviour!
