Annoying people = who have you had?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I've had two recent cases where I got really annoyed with peoples remarks to chicken keeping.

I mentioned to a friends mother that I kept hens in my garden and her reply was 'you can't do that you'll get bird flu'

The second was from ANOTHER friend who also used to keep hens. She explained that her hens were pets and she could never eat the eggs that they produced as to her they were aborted hens! Really?!

So I presume she disposed of all eggs which seems like such a waste! Why keep hens if you won't eat the eggs!

O.K rant over! What have people said to you recently that really got you :twisted: ?

"Where do the eggs come out from?" From a friend, who was completely appalled when I told her.

"You won't get eggs if you don't have a cockerel." From my grandmother. I showed her 2 fresh eggs in the nest but I think she thought I planted them there. Or perhaps she thought I employed a cockerel on a 9-5 basis. Either way she couldn't be wrong!

We're having big problems with rats, I counted eight in one go. We've had it under control for years and I hadn't seen any. Then last year our very horrible and stupid neighbour started putting out s"Ooops, word censored!"s and bones on his patio. This has encouraged the rats and large numbers of seagulls.

After trying to get him to stop I contacted the council who visited very quickly but said the problem was the chickens. I showed her how clean and safe I keep everything but it was a waste of effort. "If you've got chickens you'll have rats" was her main response.

She spoke to the neighbour and he did stop - for about a week.

We've now got poison and YS got a big one with the air rifle but I'm annoyed we're having to do the killing and also getting the blame.

I have a BHWT charity pot at the reception area at work, the majority of people ask why we have it and are genuinely interested, but the odd one is darn right rude, in fact one woman said it was ridiculous and actually took a photo to show her "friend"

I don't care what people think, we have raised over £200 for BHWT in the last year alone

My brother who is a hypocondriac, went batty going on about bird flu. When he got pneumonia in Hong Kong he swears it was bird flu

"The garden will stink and you'll get rats".

"Oh you can't clip their wings it's cruel!"

Also had word from a neighbour that she thinks I am cruel not allowing them to FR all day every day. Actually a few neighbours have been mentioning being followed by her hens. They ask if they are ours and we confirm they aren't. Seems people are not so happy to see them exposed to predators!

An annoying friend whosedad used to keep them and should have known better said "will you eat the eggs?" no I'll wear them - cos I'll eat the eggs. How stooooopid.

:oops: I can't eat my girls eggs:( I used to love eggs but have not eaten one since I got the hens, I don't know why and am hugely embarrassed!!

I've got a cockerel and have had the 'oh I couldn't eat your eggs, you're killing babies' thing several times. I explain carefully about how the embryo does not develop until the eggs in a clutch are incubated either in an incubator or by the broody sitting on them (otherwise chicks would all hatch at very different times and the mum would not be able to look after her brood) but Oh no, the people who say that just aren't ready to listen. They 'know' . Makes me mad especially as the people in question have never been vegetarians and were quite happy to eat battery raised broiler chickens

Best one I had, and have had a few of the above was 'oh, I only eat supermarket eggs as local free range ones are to strong in taste!', which also proves a point in itself!

And a friend who said I don't eat lamb as it tastes to much of sheep??

The most annoying remarks I have encountered have been when we have lost one of our girls. Our hens are family pets who happen to produce lovely eggs. When we lost some to illness I had comments like "Chicken curry for dinner tonight so.". Or when I recently posted a lovely photo of my daughter cuddling one of our ex-batts on Facebook my aunt posted a smart comment about Sunday roast and she again chose to comment o when we lost our lovely bluebell Hannah.
