CockADoodleDoo
I have tried everything. But my new girls don't seem to eat anyting exept layers pellets. I try giving them mixed corn out of my hand but they won't touch it. Then i leave it on the floor ont the run and come back later but its still there. Do you think they are still settling in? or do they just have boring taste buds!
moochoo
Mine don't like mixed corn but adore tinned sweetcorn, maybe because it's softer?
chickenlass
My three took quite a while to start to enjoy different treats...Have you tied just a few grapes at all....that was what set mine off on the "give me treats now path. " Hadn't any grapes this morning but they happily took some halved cherry tomatoes.
MaggieMcHen
Mine too - but they LUVVVVVV raisins. Porridge yuk, vegetable peelings boiled up ditto, They also decided that although they don't like whole blueberries they like them cut into 4 pieces!! Shirl
Mine aren't keen on treats except blackberries and meal worms. Actually the meal worms they go crazy for the blackberries they eat eventually. I try not to give them too many because they are still young but the meal worms mean I can get them in the run easily. sparkleeeeee
my leghorns didnt eat anything but layers pellets for about the first four weeks, when i put them in with the cream legbars who try to eat anything that comes anywhere near them (including toys that are thrown in by the kids!!) the legbars soon discovered the delights of s"Ooops, word censored!"s and sweetcorn. i think it was where they came from, not a nice place. the place where i got my cream legbars and norfolk greys was like chicken heaven and i have never had a problem with them. Shelly Eggs
We have our two chickens only 3 days and we are leaving them to their layers pellets until late afternoon. So far, they love cabbage & sprout leaves and absolutely adore red grapes! Have got them some tinned sweetcorn too and will try that tomorrow. I'm amazed at how quickly they have settled in ... found their grub and glub within about 30 seconds and are eating out of our hands already. Have found crawling into the run and lying with them quietly for 40 or so minutes each day (!) helps the bonding as they realise quickly you're not a threat. Also lift them out of the egg port at night for a cuddle and stroke. Good luck!

jak
Hope that's the tomatoes not the hens x EW! What a thought. They were rather squashed earlier on - lying in hollows they had created in the garden border whilst dustbathing. Our son couldn't see them they were so low down and thought they had managed to get into the house!
Guest
ours like mixed corn and soggy bread, everything else we've tried has seen them turn their beaks up.
AJuff
My OH is disgusted that I fed the savoy cabbage to the hens and they turned their beaks up at it!
clucky
It's interesting reading all your chickens likes and dislikes. I've had a rather interesting thing happen to us !! We have a young victoria plum tree in the corner of our garden, which has had a really good crop this year, probably down to all the rain we've had, anyway I've been slowly noticing that quite a few of the plums on the lower bottom branches were disappearing!! Maybe the children I thought, as I know my eight year old absolutely adores them. Until today whilst out in the garden all day in this beautiful weather and our four hens free-ranging all day as usual, the mystery has been solved. All four of them have been and are continuing to help themselves from the tree !! Cheeky little girls, they have demolished basically most of the bottom half of the tree of all plums. We haven't quite figured out yet how to keep them off ! So any suggestions would be greatfully received.

Poplars
Well my Dad makes extra porridge for the chickens in winter! Ours love cabbage, kale and things like that, They also love bread and they will occasionally get some cheese rind which they adore and will fight over for hours! We haven't tried them on grapes but that could be the next big thing...
