fairy&cake
I want to get some more chooks, im not sure weather to a: get more Hybreed Lohmans [gingernuts rangers] £7.00 each and get 4 of them or try something new ...... b: get a 22 week old Cream Legbar/ Brahma / rhode island £38.00 each c: get 4 pure bred auto sexed chicks and buy a heat lamp and a house for them. d: stick to what ive got and wait for Beauty to pop out some fertile eggs from beast. And get a incubator??? With ross going back to Uni full time and a baby and a hefty morgage to pay for its hard to make a decision. ! This time last yr i would have got 22 week old pure breds and got 10 of them. LOL at £380! Money money Money!!!! What do you think? Christian
Get the Lohmann Browns! Good layers and reasonable. (can't believe i said that, if it was me it would be pure breed orpingtons at least 3 of them) If you need eggs then i would get the hybrids. Rona
If money is going to be tight you have to add: e. Is this something the family really needs or just something I want? Sorry if I sound a killjoy
Lovemychooks
Oooh decisions decisions !! I would definately go for the 4 Gingernut Rangers (but mind you I would say that, i'm a big big fan of Gingernut's ). Good luck with whatever you choose though

Helen&Lee
Not sure how deep into Shropshire you are... We got our Cream Legbar and Brahmas from Pinvin (between Pershore and Worcester) they were £20 each but a bit younger than those. Lovely lady - absolutely nuts about chooks and very friendly. Let me know if you want more info - the Dark Brahma is just so friendly... My O/H tells me that Brahmas will lay through the winter - I think if money is going to be tight you should go for some that give a regular food source and (going out on a limb here) don't the Gingernut types have a shorter laying span than the others??? Could be wrong on that - I am wrong sometimes but don't tell the O/H Helen
Cinnamon
Hi Gingernuts are not the only hybrids - there are heaps of lovely hens, all different colours & all good consistant layers out there Try Medowsweet ,as they have agents all over the county (& some of their hens lay blue eggs )
JellyB
How about some ex battery hens instead?? You'd be giving them a happier life and it's rewarding to see them go from scraggy things to lovely healthy hens and you'll get the eggs. sparkleeeeee
there must be some pure breeds near you cheaper than that!! have you had a look in the adtrader online? (it is also out tomorrow) i paid £10 each for all of mine except the silkies which were £7 at 14 weeks. my cream legbars were 17wks and norfolk greys 10wks. also the smallholders association usually have tens advertised for sale and all of my chooks were from members of the norfolk smallholders. dont the pure breads lay for longer and live longer than the hybrids but lay less eggs per year, my leghorns were great layers one used to lay every day and one used to lay two every three days and they were big pure white eggs. i am still awaiting the cream legbars eggs. isnt there a hybrid that lays all sorts of different coloured eggs?, i am sure i saw it in my new chook book
Guest
Hmmm... if I were you I would probably choose option "d: stick to what ive got and wait for Beauty to pop out some fertile eggs from beast. And get a incubator???" That's what I do now! Wait for my cockerel to plant his seed and then stick the eggs under a good broody which also saves the cost of an incubator! That way you will have more money to spend on other stuff...
Karen & co.
How about Garden Poultry and a pic-nic in Delamere Forest rolled into a day out to pick new hens I'm sure they are cheaper there? or the same with the Wernlas Collection? I don't know how far either are from you, but may be worth a look My geography is dreadful and I always asume Shropshire is much closer to Cheshire than it probably is karen x
fairy&cake
wernlas is £38.00 a 20 week for a chook im thinking of waiting for beauty to lay and getting more gingernuts
Tweety
Wernlas chooks are expensive, but they are very special and most suitable for a 21st birthday present! Even if you decide against them, it is worth a day out there anyway just to have a look at them and they can't be too far away from you if you live in Shropshire. I am going to collect 4 bantams from there on Thursday and am so excited! Good luck with your new chooks.

craftyhunnypie
I would go to Wernlas & get just one chook at £38.00. Perfect birthday pressie! There is so much choice there, you will be spoilt! But I would be tempted by a cream legbar & you'd be getting another pressie at a later date.......a blue / green egg. How amazing would that be???!!!! If it is eggs you want, then hybrids. Take a look at my new chooks in my gallery. They are all lovely natured and my white leghorn is going to lay pure white china eggs, which I'm dying to see! OOOOoo decisions, decisions....! Get a cream legbar £38.00, then hatch some of beauty's egg in the Spring....little easter chicks! That way you get the best of both worlds! I think I'm getting pekins for my birthday - but I'm erm a lot lot older than you dear! Emma.x

chelsea
Wyandottes were my bird of choice and I would settle for nothing less as they are stunning, that was until we went to the breed centre and saw all different chickens....needless to say, my mind changed pretty quickly!
